Sophomore Quota
by: transfer pnmI'm going to be a 2nd-year transfer student at Tech this fall and I'm planning on going through CPC recruitment. I was wondering if sophomore quota is a real thing/ if houses are required to recruit a certain amount of sophomores? I'm really nervous about going through rush as a second year and don't know how it is at tech/what to expect. Thanks :)

You'll be fine!! There isn't a mandated quota for sophomores rushing like there is for the pledge class/chapter total but the houses at Tech are mostly open to taking sophomores. Most sororities will usually take 5-10 sophomores in their pledge class, except maybe Phi Mu. Also transfers sometimes have an advantage over second year tech students so there's a chance that will help you!

I know this was posted a while ago but I just wanted to add my experience. I rushed as a sophomore and had a great rush. The only house I didn’t get called back to was Phi Mu but I know they did end up taking a few sophomores. I preffed ADPi and ZTA. There are at least 5-10 sophomores in every PC. Being a sophomore makes it easier to connect with the girls rushing you (since most of them are sophomores too.) You have nothing to worry about!

Let's clear up what Quota actually is. It's a maximum LIMIT on New Member Class size, not a minimum requirement. No sorority is ever required to bid a certain number, but their bid list can't be over whatever Quota is set at, and Quota is not determined until after Pref when all the cards are signed. With that said, there is also a Quota Plus, which is in place to make sure that every PNM who goes to Pref and puts both houses on her card, or just the one if that's where she gets invited, is guaranteed a bid. That way no one who goes all the way through the process can be mismatched and left out in the cold without a bid. This means that houses take more than Quota, but not because their bid list is bigger, they are just taking the PNM's who were wanted but didn't get matched initially because of the Quota limit. Also at some schools there are two separate quotas, one for freshmen and another for upperclassmen, with the same quota system in place, but Tech doesn't do that. This is because sororities at schools with cut-throat rushes would automatically cut anyone who wasn't a freshman, so they had to do something to give the older PNM's a fighting chance, but that has never been a problem at Tech, so is not needed. Phi Mu is run by a bunch of old biddies who still want to operate under the old system, so they make them cut upperclassmen just because, the reasoning being that they won't be members as long because they come in as older students. They don't get how it is at Tech, and so Phi Mu ends up missing out on a lot of stellar upperclassmen, which is too bad for them but just means more awesome PNM's for the rest of the sororities.
