guy's guide to rush

by:

Fraternity rush is like speed dating: lots of dudes looking to snag a couple dates and numbers. Except with rush it's exclusively dudes, and instead of dates, you're looking for a group of guys to call your brothers. Given that, here's some rush advice from a former Rush Chair:

1. Go to as many houses as you can on the first night of Rush. There's more than 30 chapters on this campus and it's good to get as wide a view as possible to find where you'll fit in best.

2. Especially on the first two nights, be ready to hear the same questions (Name, Hometown, Major, Sports, etc.) at nearly every house you visit. After the first questions, you can get to know more about the house.

3. Ask questions. It's very intimidating and you may think that we'll judge you for asking, but we've all been through the process and know just what you're going through. You'll never know if you like a house without asking a few questions.

4. Just because you join a certain house doesn't mean you can't be friends with people. Girls hang out with people they like, and guys in other chapters can still be your friends even if you are "rivals".

5. Be yourself.

I cannot stress the last point enough. No one likes a poser or a pretender. If you're into golf and sailing boats, there's a house for you. If you're into getting high and playing video games, there's a house for you. If you express who you are, you'll find the right place.

Have fun and Go Jackets!

I know that some of the fraternities have already been rushing this summer. Are there any houses that fill their pledge classes before fall rush, so it's a waste of time to go there?

Fraternity Pledge classes don't get "full" at Georgia Tech. Fraternities will bid guys that meet their standards, regardless of how many bids that means they're giving out. So not doing summer rush doesn't mean you can't get into a certain fraternity. That being said, fraternities that have a great summer rush can often slack off a bit during formal rush or may be a bit more selective then a fraternity that had a lousy summer rush (especially if a top or mid-upper tier fraternity has a sub-par summer rush, that may really affect how they approach formal rush).

Formal rush? There's not some kind of organized process for fraternity rush is there? Like you need invitations or something?

No. Guys get invited up to different events over the summer but Formal Rush is just walking around to the different houses. Every house will be open and serving food during Formal Rush.

Yeah, by "formal rush" I was just referring to official rush week at the beginning of the fall semester.
