commitment?

by: gobu

Im a sophomore and thinking about rushing but worried about the commitment. havent been so into greek life but i want to find new friends.
Do i have to go to ever formal/mixer/social? How busy does it get with events? How expensive can greek life get? Is it worth my money?

I would definitely recommend going through recruitment! The time commitment is totally what you make of it, almost all events aren't mandatory! Especially the mixers, those definitely aren't mandatory, you go to what you want to go to. New member period (usually the 6 weeks after receiving a bid) can be a little bit busy with finding your big/little pair and learning about the chapter but in my experience I was still able to do everything else I was involved in and still have free time, it wasn't anything too crazy. After new member period it's even less busy, with usually the only mandatory event each week being a chapter meeting for an hour or so, but say you got scheduled to work or had a big test the next day or something, you can usually get excused. Comparatively to most schools, our greek life is relatively inexpensive. It's typically somewhere around 400-500$ per semester, and each chapter has payment plans and financial aid to make it manageable. This money goes toward retreats, sisterhood events, date parties, formals, running the philanthropy events, and national dues, among other things. I think it's 100% worth it, as I have met awesome people and always have something to do if I want it but if I'm not in the mood I can opt out. At least try going through recruitment with an open mind and I bet you'll see how valuable it is! Plus, greek life is wayyyyyyyy more chill at BU than most schools, so you don't find that stereotypical cattiness or rivalries or anything, and unlike some schools, it doesn't dominate your life or identity.
