do sororities actually care about each other?

by:

I just got a bid from a middle tier sorority and I was so happy to get to be a part of their sisterhood! During recruitment everyone I talked to in all the chapter rooms kept saying (especially on Philanthropy night) that one of the things they love about greek life at BU is how supportive all the chapters are of each other. But on monday I went to SKs dancing event which even had participants from most sororities and fraternities and they still had hardly anyone in the audience. Like most of the tables and chairs were open, and there were like double the number of SK girls that there were sisters from other sororities? And now I'm starting to reconsider my place in my chapter and in greek life here, because I'm really worried about it being an isolating experience and I don't know if I want to be part of a group that only thinks about themselves and doesn't support the other sororities the way I was told sororities did here. I'm freaking out a little over this, can anyone give me some guidance?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Think about how it's midterms week and a lot of girls haven't had time to catch up following recruitment and bid day. There is a lot of great support in the Greek community among many chapters, but it was just bad timing with exams this week and people not being able to make it.

I'm a senior in a sorority and I totally get what you're saying. While It's true that the Panhellenic community isn't as supportive or nice as it may seem during recruitment (hence all the mean comments on this website), being in a sorority is not an isolating experience. Of course each chapter cares mostly about their chapter, and during recruitment chapter women can only say nice things about other chapters, so I see why it could be a let down to finally see the truth, but this was a tough week to attend an event and most philanthropy events cost money so it's hard for everyone to support everyone as that would be extremely expensive. I go to a few philanthropy events a semester (3 or 4 total) which means I miss out on a lot, but overall I try to be supportive of the Panhellenic community! If you are looking for a better sense of Panhellenic love then go to panhel meetings on wednesdays or maybe consider joining panhel itself. I hope this helps! BU Greek life is definitely worth while!!!

Did your own chapter tell you guys this event was happening? Maybe you could ask your officers to advertise the events more and encourage your chapter to go to others? :)

You should talk to your chapter officers!! Especially your pledge educator! It's unfortunate not many people turned out but like said above it is midterm week, and the attendance at philanthropies will definitely go up later on in the semester!!
