signs of a top tier fraternity
by: ΣΧWhat do you guys think are the most important things to do in order to make a fraternity here top tier? In terms of involvement, on and off campus, and parties?

History, size, reputation, involvement on campus, relations with sororities, parties, type of guys that join.
These are the criteria for "top tier"
That's why even though ATO is big and very involved on campus they are not considered "top tier". They are not respected, don't have a great history, and take a rather dorky type of guy.

It depends what you want. Youre not going to please everyone regardless of how good you are and with fraternities, you can build a reputation that future pledge classes will change significantly. As an organisation you have to decide what you want to devote your funds, time, and people to develop. For party fraternities like Delt, Phi Delt, and SAE, they focus on what they can do to have the most fun and devote themselves to doing so. People who dont go out and dont party may not value that and, by default think less of the fraternity for choosing to do so. Fraternities that aren't oriented towards partying like ATO and PhiChi devote themselves to SING and float and sorority relations. As a result, people who see fraternities as an outlet of fun dont like them as much as the party fraternities. Furthermore, those are the kinds of guys you attract with rush.
All this just goes to say that it's about what your organisation values. It isnt to say that party fraternities cant be good at sing, float, and sorority relations, and vice versa, its just a matter of what you hold as important.

I agree with everything except the hate on ATO. Every top fraternity takes dorks and that's so that they don't turn into Phi Delt or Delt. I really think these guys make an effort to get to know and pair with all the sororities for various campus activities and that is what has made them get good. You are right about history. They are not as strong based on the last 20 years of BU Greek Life, but neither was Kappa Sig back when my sister was here. It will only take another year or so to see that Beta will be moving up with Phi Delt, Sig Ep, and Fiji moving down for these same reasons.
