I think the reason is because it is so much harder for guys to excel in a song and dance routine. Singing and dancing is second nature to a lot of the girls but guys have to really work at it. Also guy acts typically have way less performers so having 70 people really nail an act is more impressive than 200 girls on stage

Guys and girls just bring different energy and both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I'd say its judged pretty fairly. Entertainment is 30 points on the scoresheet, and thats just the overall entertainment/production value. It's not a matter of guys acts getting propped up by the judges out of pity for their horrendous dance moves just because they're guys. If a guys act scores higher with less clean dancing, most likely they brought a different more entertaining energy. That being said, girls acts on average probably get the highest marks the choreography section much more than guys (with KOT as the exception).
