recommendations?

by: BUBound

How do recommendations work? I only know alumni of 2 of the 8 sororities here. Are they absolutely necessary to get a bid, and if not, which sororities do not require a recommendation to get a bid? Does having more than 1 recommendation increase your chances of getting a bid? Also, if you do not know alumni of a particular sorority, what can you do to get one? Sorry, this is so many questions, I'm just a little unclear on what to do for rush!

Also, how to you let sororities know that you're a legacy?

They say that all sororities require recommendations for a bid, but I know some girls that got into a sorority without one.

I don't know about all of the sororities but I do know about Pi Phi and Tri Delt because I'm a legacy to both. You have to a rec to get a bid with these two sororities. With that being said, if you don't have one and they are TOTALLY in love with you, they'll get one for you. BUT most girls that they want already have a rec so that puts someone without one at an extreme disadvantage. You only need one rec (the official recommendation) but you can also send letters of support from other alumni. Most sororities like to have 2 of those along with your rec. See if your town has a Panhellenic association and they can help you find connections. If not, ask your friends who are already in a sorority and they can tell you who they used for their recs. The recs don't have to come from someone from BU. They can be from any alumni in good standing. Hope this helps!

Thank you! So I should try to get recs for all 8 then?

Recommendations matter at different levels for each sorority. If you don't know anyone, there should a panhellenic around your home.

I would get recs for all 8 if you can and then you won't have any worries. Pi Phi has a legacy form online that you fill out and it's electronically sent to the chapter that you're attending. Also you should list it on your social resume and like "also" mentioned, the rec form has a place for your legacy information on it. Good luck and keep an open mind. There's a place for everyone at BU!

stop asking about legacies. nobody cares about legacies. if you have a lousy personality and do not fit in the sorority you will not automatically get a bid.

Every sorority has a legacy form to fill out online. It doesn't guarantee you a bid but it lets the chapter know that you're going through rush. It generally will get you a little more attention than the non-legacy rushees. Please don't listen to negative people on this site who just want to bring others down.

Legacy automatically catches the sororities eye and they will most likely try to reach out to you. It matters and it helps.

Legacy does matter! Maybe not as much as a school that does fall rush but it can only help. Don't listen to this jerk, they don't know anything.
