what really happens when you get dropped from soro
by: soph girl
im a rising sophmore and im still having a really hard time accepting what happened to me during rush. can any upperclassman girls shed some light on the truth behind why I would have been dropped from the sororities that I really liked/felt comfortable with during recruitment? I ended up with a bid from a sorority that I attempted to drop every single round, and did join, but I still feel so outcast and upset by the whole process
just looking for some clarity and explanation to why rush was great for all of my friends but didnt work out for me!

Hi, since I haven't gone through rush from the other side, I'm probably not the best person to answer this question. But I have noticed things that girls have in common when they "do well" at rush.
1) Extroversion. Rush is a series of short and often shallow conversations. Some people are really good at getting them to a deeper level or being more engaging. The sorority member doesn't want to have to feel awkward or direct the whole conversation, so being naturally talkative and outgoing gets a lot of girls through to the next round.
2) Connections. You don't want to give a girl a bid and then once you get to know her, find out she's actually crazy. Knowing one or two people in a chapter isn't going to get you a bid because one member doesn't have that much say. But if you're friends with a lot of them, or friends with other girls they want in their chapter, they're more likely to give you a bid because they already know you outside the shallow rush process.
3) Looks. There's plenty of less attractive girls in Key 3 chapters, and gorgeous girls in lower or middle tiers, which is why I don't think this is number 1. But whether they admit it or not, they want their chapter to be considered attractive so that they can mix with frats they consider attractive. Being fashionable can make a huge difference- I've noticed that the pretty girls in lower-mid sororities are usually dressed more plainly. (Continued...)

4) Social media presence. They are stalking you on Facebook before rush has even started. This is often how they determine if you have the above 3 qualities- if you look photogenic, have lots of pictures out partying or with friends, and hang out with other girls they want. They might already decide if they want you or not based on Facebook. You might be pretty and extroverted, but not a big Facebook user, so they'll match you with lower rushers, who you might not click with as much if you had been paired with their more successful rushers.
Again, this is all based on my observations from my friends and I going through rush, along with some knowledge passed on from older members. I could be wrong about certain aspects. But what I hope you know is that there is nothing wrong with you-some girls are just better at playing the rush game.
