what is the point of going to a well ranked school?

by:

Honestly it seems like everyone lands the same jobs after graduating. Why bother with a "good" school if it doesn't matter? It's not like everyone at Duke becomes a millionaire so who cares. If we are all "smarter" why can't we all create million dollar inventions? Doesn't this make our level of smarts not truly much more useful than most people?

I'd like to add to this - There's only so much smarter you can be before you start doing exceptional things like selling a company for several million because of your genius product ideas. So if Duke students aren't up there doing that, 100% or close to of the time, or something like it, how does this make us severely more smart than an average person? Cause if someone was so much smarter than an average Joe, wouldn't they do exceptional things in life? No offense, but to me if you're say 3x more talented, more smart than an average employee because you go to Duke, wouldn't that make you easily able to accomplish something exceptional? Or do these "Test smarts" really not matter, and the majority of this just a result of high school overachievers with high work ethic and test scores, that doesn't translate to real world stuff.

yeah Duke kids land the same top jobs other people do from wherever just somehow more smart and valuable in a way that no one will ever no nor will ever matter due to the lack of applicability of test-score getting in the real world.

I have to agree strongly with OP, very few Duke grads do anything "big".

Look at the statistics for graduates of your local state school and come back if you’re still confused.

sad truth of it is that kids who go to schools like Duke are too privileged to do special things. Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc.. have a lot of the top 1% wealth, but they also get the hardest working kids who are most likely to change the world. we get more smart kids who come from money and kids who will get sucked into finance rather than do anything of substance. so yeah, we will make money and a good amount of it because of our school's name and good work ethic, but few of us will do anything big.

The kids making a big impact are those who are too busy grinding to worry about social rankings. Most students here didn't come in believing in the social hierarchy that they see now. The hierarchy is something that Duke makes you believe in. As a result, Duke, being what it is, makes people spend too much time socially adjusting rather than making their dreams realities. We have the resources and the intelligence to make things happen, but I think it's obvious that the kids who are gonna change the world aren't worried about social status

It's not just socially adjusting it's the whole thing about going to Duke, spending your life trying to get into a social group, taking classes like Spanish which have no career relevance. The whole point of Duke is to fulfill a lot of requirements that frankly don't add much to your career. So education helps very little.

Next, of course the whole culture is about seeming cool to people and throwing parties and partying a lot. It leaves very little time to have a serious thought about doing something real with your life.

I also think Duke is the level of ambition under any sort of great accomplishment. Good grades, good paying job, very little interest in being the next Steve jobs, and if there are, there's very few people who execute this.

I don't necessarily think social hierarchy ruins it...but I see your point.
