Are recommendations really needed? I know at my in-state schools (Auburn and Bama) Greek life is very competitive and you need recommendations. Are they an important factor here?

Nah just meet as many brothers as you can, go to pregames, don't act like a wierdo and you will be straight. Rush is mostly informal here

For sororities or fraternities? Sororities they don't matter much. They will get you to the second round in some houses but nothing after that.
