old row

by: Confused

I've seen it on here a couple times but I don't know what it means. What is "old row" and why do people keep taking about it?

"Old Row" is a term used by fraternities at the university of Alabama to describe the older fraternities along University Avenue. In the 1960s some fraternities moved to build houses along another street. That was "New Row".
Old Row became a term for the old elite. it also became a clothing line. It has nothing to do with FSU.

Yes they do t-shirt campaigns but it's more than just a clothing line. It started off as a forum for southern greek life and has grown through social media. Most of it's following comes from SEC and some BIG 12 schools. You're right, it is not relevant at FSU.

The term has spread and is now used to describe the oldest fraternities and sororities at any school. Old Row fraternities/sororities are typically the top houses and usually don't socialize with new row fraternities/sororities. SAE, KA, Sigma Chi, Kappa Sig, and Phi Delt are the most common top houses in the SEC. Other fraternities that are also typically strong throughout the south are Sig Nu, ATO, FIJI, Pike, and Pi Kapp.

Since FSU used to be an all girls school, we don't have an "old row", which is why fraternities like Phi Sig, Phi Tau, and Theta Chi are more popular here, despite being not as poplar nationally.

Phi Mu, Chi Omega, And ADPi are OldRow sororities. Other sororities like KD and Tri Delt are also prevalent and popular at southern schools.

ADPi is not old row at Bama. KKG and AGD should be added to your Old Row group. But guess what? Old Row is sponsored by a beer company and means groups pay an extra fee to belong and they all have a party and a t-shirt that the majority of the Greeks don't have.

I was using the more generic definition of old row, but you're right. If you're talking about the official and original Old Row at Alabama, ADPi is not old row whereas KKG and AGD are.
