sorority comments

I'm just wondering after seeing what the approximate fees are on Office of Greek Life, if it is possible to juggle classes, a part time job (for sorority fees), and sorority activities? I was really involved in a lot of things in high school (cheerleading, dance team, service clubs, etc) and I really think that being in a sorority is a great way to stay involved. But with tuition fees and everything else, I don't know if rushing will be a good idea or a bad mistake. Being part of a sorority is something that I always dreamed of doing while attending college. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I know several girls that juggle school with a job and sorority life. Being in a sorority takes up a little more time when you first get in bc it is important for new pledge classes to learn about their new house as well as bond with each other and older girls. However, it is not as time-consuming as you might think. If you can afford the dues at least for right now, I would recommend that you definitely rush and at worst you might have to drop later on down the road but the friends you have made by then will stay with you. Also, there is a preiod of time when you first get into the sorority where you are free to drop without paying anything, so if during your first couple of weeks it seems like it'll be too much of a burden you can drop before paying anything at all. It's really a fulfilling investment, I had to drop my sorority bc I couldnt afford it anymore but if I could go back in time I'd do the same thing all over again bc I met amazing people. =]

I would say do it. If it gets too much, you may have to cut out some things like socials or buying a bunch of t shirts but, really I think you'll manage if you were able to in high school, and if you can afford it, I would say go for it -- btw you have to do well in classes to keep up your ability to go to everything anyway, so it won't be a problem. School really is the first priority THEN fun (no, really don't forget why you're here..I see that too much) - :) no worries, RUSH!

here's some advice that worked well for me! schedule your classes on certain days, like all MWF classes or all T/TH classes... use the other days to work. it will seem alot less hectic for you! also, lots of houses have girls that pay for themselves (which they will explain during rush) and different payment plans to acomodate. also if you have bright futures, i put mine towards my dues and it helps out immensely!

I love how jerks sometimes get on her and say we are spoiled daddies girls who've never had a job and just mooch off our parents...here we are having this conversation about how to pay for it using scholarships and working....supporting and enabling ourselves to do something we love! I know how you feel I have to do the same thing. Its hard at times but so worth it. Go Greek! <3

i pay my own tution, pay my own dues, take classes everyday, and work part time every afternoon. I take morning classes, each lunch at the house, and then go to work from there. most houses offer a meal plan and include socials in the dues, leaving you with only shirts to pay for out of pocket. i still have plenty of time to study and have fun even though i'm working also. it can be done!!!

Another word of advice - probably best to sign up for only 12 or 13 hours your first semester - especially if you're planning on rushing and working. Lots of activities in the fall (football, parties, etc.) on top of pledge responsibilities, so don't overload yourself.
