how do snaps usually work and will there be a lot this year? how many girls are left in recruitment?

There are never a lot of snaps. There are only a very, very few.
Snaps have nothing to do with how many girls are left in recruitment.
Snaps come from houses that don't reach quota during bid matching.
Quota is completely dependent on the number of pnm's signing cards after pref. More pnm's = higher quota; fewer pnm's = lower quota.
That's why there are so few snap bids every single year. You aren't getting a snap from a house that dropped you.
