Sorority retention rates?

by:

Where can I find out the retention rates for each sorority? This is something I want to consider before rushing

If you really, really want to find that out, you have to dig around but if you compare the semester scholarship reports you will find it. All you have to do is compare the end of one semester's Total membership with the beginning of the next semester's Active membership.
Here is an example using ADPi (I used them because they were at the top and easy to see, I AM NOT AN ADPi)
Fall 2022:
Active Members 182 (start of fall before recruitment)
Total Members 266 (end of fall after recruitment/COB)
Spring 2023:
Active Members 253 (start of spring)
Total Members 260 (end of spring with COB)
So you can see that 13 of ADPi members did not return after fall semester, and they took 7 new members in spring.

Losing members is a combination of graduation (there are always December grads), members studying abroad or interning, and drops. Drops don't necessarily mean someone did not like their sorority; most often there are family issues back home, transfers to other schools, or financial issues. The numbers vary every semester from house to house, so you actually need to look at three years worth of data to see a trend.

With all that said, the sororities do the choosing and they decide who to invite back from round to round. Your ranks are secondary and you can't pre-pick a house. Also, objective data is not nearly as important as gut feelings in recruitment. This can't be said enough. Go with your gut, not with numbers.

So are you saying now Adpi does Spring rush? Something they say they dont do...this is priceless

No, I am not "saying" anything, and the data does not point to a spring rush, just to COB. Spring rush involves hosting events for interested pnm's, which is one way to COB. But any sorority can offer COB's without doing a 'spring rush' if they already know girls they want to offer bids to. COB just means Continuous Open Bidding and holding a 'spring rush' is not necessarily implied or required. It's not exactly a secret when a sorority takes new members outside of formal recruitment because it's all on the reports.

If there are spots open and they have girls they like - they’ll take them. If they don’t have anny girls they like - they won’t. This is not a secret or an hard concept. And to make new girls feel special houses will make sure they fun experience but it’s not the same as the fall. Fall is just its own thing and a formal process.

Do not go off of info you see online. It’s not accurate a lot of the time. I’d say at least 50% of that data isn’t accurate so don’t go on that. Sucks but I’d rather know that that info isn’t reliable before I base a decision off it.

For example — if you have 10 girls go study abroad that means they don’t count. When they return those numbers are added back in. And same with transfers. So theoretically that should mean there could be spots open in the spring - but it’s a loophole. So if they have someone’s sister or a best friend or something and spots open up — they can take them - or take transfers if they have them that show up. Plus — all info is self reported and just incorrect reporting can make these numbers in correct.

I second this. Unfortunately the retention numbers aren’t accurate most of the time. Now if a chapter is like 50 under total that may be something to think about (it personally gives me toxic vibes) but there could be a lot of reasons for that.

It's not about the smaller numbers in a single given semester that show overall retention, it's about trends over time showing consistent larger than average losses, between semesters from Total membership to Active Membership.

Transfers don’t count against total-they are freebies. So if total is 300, and ABC sorority membership is at 300, they can’t COB BUT , there are 9 ABC transfers from different colleges enrolling at FSU wanting to affiliate with the FSU chapter. The chapter can take them all if they want to, which would put them over total.

Here are the spring numbers… as you can see most sororities are in the same membership ballpark with only a few way off. DZ, AGD, SDT, AOPi … Those are your bottom 4 period! And that’s not being mean. That’s just saying something is off. Maybe during recruitment if asked they will have an explanation.

Retention isn’t something public. You can ask during recruitment.

By: You’ll never find it
by: ^

WTF. I guess you are incapable of understanding the Scholarship Reports. And if you ask a sorority about their retention rate, you are not getting a real answer from anyone. Also that's a really rude question.

how is that rude? I think there’s a way to ask about retention that isn’t rude.

What kind of an answer do you really think you are going to get? You won't get a truthful answer and no one is going to spout numbers for you. Plus you will have created a very awkward point in your conversation, no matter how you ask, that will not help you one bit and could get you cut. Look at the reports and figure it out, it's all public.
