Legacy for sororities

by:

i'm rushing as a freshman in the fall and am wondering how much legacy status helps you get a bid at the top chapters. if so, would it still be relevant if my mom was in this sorority at a different college? (still a large southern school) i know I each individual chapter varies and that legacy overall doesn’t matter as much anymore, but in case i really like this sorority would it help? :) ty!!

legacy can sometimes help but fsu doesn’t require sororities to take legacies so it really matters more which sorority you get along with the most. id still try to go in with an open mind and be yourself and try to find the best fit because a lot of times it isn’t your legacy.

Neither FSU nor Panhellenic have any say in membership selection. Each sorority has national guidelines from their own organizations that they follow, so what AXO does is different from what Kappa does, which is different from ZTA does, and so on. Many, if not all of the sororities’ national officers, have made the decision that legacies do not get any special privileges anymore, such as a mandatory invitation to the second round or being placed at the top of the bid list if you attend pref at your legacy house, but you should put down any sorority affiliations you have on your recruitment application. It’s always nice to know that a legacy will be at the next party. Good luck!!

a lot of chapters don’t take legacy’s into account anymore. it can help you get invited back for round two but at that point let’s hope they like you

Some fraternities here, one especially, are heavy into legacies. Some others won’t take them at all.

There are so many sorority legacies that go thru recruitment every year for every house at FSU that most houses could fill every NM class with JUST legacies. Legacy status is just to make old alumni feel better. It means NOTHING now.

Recommendation letters also mean nothing. I wouldn’t even bother wasting my time getting them. When everyone has one for each sorority and everyone is getting them from people they don’t even know it loses the value.

Just be yourself. Don’t make being a legacy your entire personality.

There is no such thing as a legacy anymore. Good luck but know it won’t help you and could hurt you.

It won't get you a bid but it definitely won't hurt if your legacy house knows you are coming through. Just tell your legacy house, no need for the others to know because they might think you are setting your sites on that house.

Legacies do count for something. And so do Rec letters. You need to make yourself known so having a letter is a good way to do that.

By: Yea they do

Everyone has letters and most of them are from women the PNM doesn’t even know. Legacies don’t hold much value anymore except maybe in a few houses. The name of the game is inclusion and diversity . If Janie’s a first generation college student she should have the same opportunity to get in Tri D as Sally who mom, aunt, and grandma was a TriD. That’s what’s going on now.

Most Rec letter online forms ask the writer to identify HOW they know the PNM. if a former chapter president for example writes a letter and is detailed about what an asset to the chapter a girl will be — it will be taken more seriously than someone’s aunt’s best friend’s cousin who doesn’t even know the girl.

If you’re a legacy let them know.
