Are “top tier frats” all about looks?
by: ?
I decided i want to try joining a top tier fraternity through fall recruitment in my sophomore year, but I’m kind of doubting it because I don’t look like most guys that are on their ig pages. Does that significantly impact my chances of getting in a top frat? I actually have never seen subpar dudes in top tier frats. Do they choose new members based on the appearance? I’ve heard mixed answers about it at fsu specifically. I’m an athlete but I really don’t consider myself good-looking. Serious answers please.

At the big Greek schools I’ve seen in the south the most popular fraternities have the largest membership and best looking men overall. Sometimes a relative or legacy slips in. However the most obvious difference between the top tier fraternities and the rest is a culture of confidence. You can take an average guy and put him in Pike, KA or Theta Chi and he will become like them. Take the same guy and put him in a middle or bottom tier and he will become like them.

One idea to explain it. Imagine a certain type, the way he looks, acts and his interests. 90% of those guys are only going to join the fraternities socially ranked in the top half. There aren’t enough of those guys to fill chapters of 150-250 members, but top half fraternities are pretty much defined how many of those certain types they have. I believe this is true.
