Are “top tier frats” all about looks?

by: ?

I decided i want to try joining a top tier fraternity through fall recruitment in my sophomore year, but I’m kind of doubting it because I don’t look like most guys that are on their ig pages. Does that significantly impact my chances of getting in a top frat? I actually have never seen subpar dudes in top tier frats. Do they choose new members based on the appearance? I’ve heard mixed answers about it at fsu specifically. I’m an athlete but I really don’t consider myself good-looking. Serious answers please.

At the big Greek schools I’ve seen in the south the most popular fraternities have the largest membership and best looking men overall. Sometimes a relative or legacy slips in. However the most obvious difference between the top tier fraternities and the rest is a culture of confidence. You can take an average guy and put him in Pike, KA or Theta Chi and he will become like them. Take the same guy and put him in a middle or bottom tier and he will become like them.

So what you are saying is anyone can be “top tier”? Totally inclusive if you just become who you hang out it. Good to know top tier really isn’t anything special.

At Bama, the guys in the most exclusive Old Row houses tend to look like balding, middle-aged dads, while the facey guys tend to be in New Row houses.

I think you need to go back to high school. If you are honestly worried about being “ top tier” or “popular “ as a sophomore in college I feel sorry for you.

You care about it more than the person who made the post

Yes but if you have an amazing personality, and are funny as hell, you could end up in a top fraternity. I know several "bigger guys", or those that aren't as handsome, (in the Top 5) who are literally some of their most popular. Everyone loves the funny guy.

Looks MATTER. Look at Pike. All of those guys were for sure super popular jocks in hs… I heard their freshman PC from last year had 6 Prom Kings!

If you played a team sport in high school, good looking, sociable and not weird, you'll probably fit right in any fraternity.

If you don’t even consider yourself good-looking, NAH

One idea to explain it. Imagine a certain type, the way he looks, acts and his interests. 90% of those guys are only going to join the fraternities socially ranked in the top half. There aren’t enough of those guys to fill chapters of 150-250 members, but top half fraternities are pretty much defined how many of those certain types they have. I believe this is true.

I have to remind you the fact that IFC is 95% white. Yeah they’re def judging people by their appearance. It’s lookism aka racism
