No they did not need to acknowledge it if it wasn’t true.. Rumors do not warrant a public statement. They wrote it because it happened.

The problem is just you assume that you're automatically correct about something, and that anyone who has any other different opinion in the matter is "in KD" and therefore has a vested interest and bias driving their comment.
Not the case.
