They are not important and can bite you in the butt. Most sororities resent that they have to invite some girls back due to having a Rec letter over girls that they like more that don't have them, knowing that the girl with the Rec letter will more than likely get cut after second round.
Rec letters are often written by people who don't know the girl rushing and we often do not read them.

This troll is trying to sabotage your rush with some really bad advice. Recs can only help you; a lot of pnm's have their recs, and there are so many great girls coming through that when decisions have to be made about who to ask back, having the rec is often the tie-breaker that gets one pnm invited back instead of another who is just as great but doesn't have one. All sororities appreciate the pnm's who care enough about their house to get a rec for them. There is no such thing as a sorority being required to ask pnm's back because they have recs, that's not how they work. A rec will not get you a bid, but it can help you gain that advantage that could make all the difference.
