will we be stronger when we have more fraternities?
by: OscarA few years ago we had 25 IFC fraternities and now we only have 16. Will we be a stronger fraternity system when all of those missing nationals reestablished their chapters here as colonies again?

No. The demographics don't support more fraternities. There will be too many fraternities because the male student population won't have the numbers of guys who are likely to join. Enrollment is declining, numbers of foreign students attending who are less likely to join a fraternity are up, and Greek life is getting a terrible reputation (deserved) from kids getting hazed to death. Membership numbers could tank at existing frats because everyone is spread too thin. Better to have fewer but stronger and sustainable houses.

Not to argue, but it doesn’t look like the chapter sizes have increased or decreased. We need the energy of phi Delt and sigma chi, Phi Sig and lambda chi. Competition makes everyone better. If losing the big fraternities would make the small fraternities better then they would already be better. Who has there to take phi delt’s place. Are the Pikes any bigger or better? Are the alpha delta any bigger or better.?

Used to be thousands of guys going through rush then ifc started making guys pay, like sororities, and the school started making PNMs attend lectures and now they’re going to start charging their Greek fee this fall. Nobody should have to pay to go through Fraternity rush.

I have a serious question. I’m on the side of bringing back our best fraternities and I’m surprised and saddened at the attitude that we don’t need them. But maybe I’m the one who’s wrong.
Please tell me, anyone who knows if you were here then. When we had the really good chapters like Phi Delt, LXA, Sigma Chi and Phi Sig was the average chapter size bigger then or was it smaller? Were rushees more attracted to fraternities then when there were more and better choices? Would the Delta, Pikes, ATO, phi Taus, TX etc. be as good as they are now if the had to face competition? What about KA, Kappa Sig SAE and Fiji?

If the chapter sizes have stayed the same then that means that the balance is right. Competition is all well and good but not if there is a shrinking pool of potential members. What is "better" if the pledge class sizes are too small from too many fraternities coming back on too quickly and not enough rushees to go around? Where is the "energy" in a 10 person pledge class? Where is the money coming from to pay for the tailgates and parties and everything else socially? You need a certain amount of dues coming in every semester and you must fill every room in the house. You want to rent rooms to geeds to make ends meet? I'm just saying that letting nine houses back on all at once and expecting magic to happen is unrealistic. Just need to consider supply and demand or the whole system tanks.
