real rush options?

by: Brad

Starting FSU this fall. Was reading the IFC website about rush week. It said you have three options after getting a bid, and one of those is to sit and wait until the end of rush week. My sister is an FSU sorority and she said NO! She said I'm better to tell them I'm not ready to make a decision before they offer a bid because if I 'sit' they won't let me come back again. She says some fraternities see it as insulting. What is the truth please?

Your sister is probably right. Here's the problem. If you want to visit what you're heard are the top houses, you'd better not wait until late in the week. On the other hand, if you go to a 'top' house and get a bid and want to sit on it you may not have that opportunity.
I don't know what advice to give you. Maybe you should rank your favorites in order and then visit them in that order. Maybe someone else here can help.

There's a big difference between the way sororities recruit and the way fraternities. My advice is if you want to avoid the problem you articulated, if you think they're going to offer you a bid ask them to STOP before they get too far into it and say how much you appreciate it but you promised your girlfriend you wouldn't take any bid until Thursday night. Ask if you can come back.

That's the worst advice I've ever heard^

Get your most wanted houses out of the way first and try to get a bid then if you aren't succeeding go to your 2nd 3rd 4th options after that. It's ok to wait on a bid on the first night

Thanks PaHa. You say it's OK to wait on a bid the first night but I've heard there are fraternities, at least one, that won't let you sit. I guess you just have to play by ear.

If you get offered a bid, most fraternities will give you the option to sit on the bid, which gives you the opportunity to check out other houses or think the decision over. Do not think it is insulting to sit a bid;they totally understand. If a fraternity doesn't offer you to sit, and wants you to accept it on the spot, they're stingy, desperate, and probably not worth your time. Goodluck.
