i know this is shallow but...
by: pnmI really don't mean to be a shallow person, I really don't, but is sorority recruitment based solely on looks? Like I considered myself a fairly attractive person, at least enough to get in a mid/low mid tier sorority, and have been extremely passionate about my involvement with philanthropy, but I've been continually dropped and dropped throughout all of rush and ended up in one of the lowest houses. I feel so awkward in my house and want to drop. How is rush supposed to work when I don't feel at home and was basically given by end of the line option?

The process is usually not fair. Trust me, I have been there. It is so competitive that unless you have the connections (like being a legacy for example) you will be dropped from most houses right away. The average rusher who does not have connections is at a huge disadvantage, even if they are genuine and amazing people. So do not let that get to you, plenty of girls who have rushed have the same feelings I promise you. My advice for you at this time is to keep an open mind, you may change your feelings once you get to really know the chapter. If you do this and still do not feel at home, drop. Do not settle, you deserve to be in a place that you feel comfortable.

You have to be honest with yourself. While there are genuinely good people in every chapter, some do emphasize looks (with some allowance for legacies and strong connections). Those chapters recruit on a somewhat more superficial level.
The problem is kind of that nobody wants to be a member of a club that would have them as a member. There's the argument "but I'm a great person!" but then you don't want to be a member of a house that's full of great people (or definitely could be, if people would stop dropping them because they're bottom tier) and recruits more on personality than model looks.
Everyone comes into rush thinking that they belong in Zeta or KD or Theta or wherever. But the truth is, by joining a sorority, you're entering into a system that judges and sorts people based at least partly on how you look, among other factors that are superficial enough to get you through rush week. When people say "trust the process" I don't think they mean "trust that the greek system has your best interests at heart." I think they mean "trust that you will end up in a house that's appropriate for you & how you present yourself."
We're not all Zetas. I know I'm not. People need to separate the superficial part of the dream of being greek from the reality that not everybody gets to be a special top tier unicorn (like I said, I know I'm not!).
Sorry you're disappointed. Give it a chance though.

Say a bunch of PNMs are like a 6 out of 10 on the looks scale. That's not all that matters but whatever. They all get cut from everything but the lower tier. So they drop because they're all 6/10 and they think the lower chapters are 4/10. Meanwhile this makes space for the girls who are 4/10 and had realistic expectations to join that chapter. But if the 6/10 girls had just stayed in, you'd have a whole pledge class of prettier girls.
There are a lot of other factors at work and this is a very shallow way to look at it, especially as looks have nothing to do with the quality of sisterhood in a chapter. But if PNMs would just get through the whole process they might not be so hurt at the end of the week. They might find themselves at a house they thought they didn't want, surrounded by other girls who are a 6/10.

I felt the same way, but if you really want to do it, then why not? I did it again for the same reasons as you, I wanted to be a part of Panhellenic and I am passionate about it. The process just sucks though and their is no guarantee that it will go better the next time since it is so competitive and the number of girls rushing keeps growing. It is just something you have to think about.
