real talk for pnm's

by:

By this time tomorrow there will be 100's of girls who will have been cut by their "dream" house(s). It happens every year and you won't be alone. If this happens to you by Saturday, I'd like you to come back and re-read this post.

1. Remember.... IT'S NOT YOU and you probably weren't cut because you weren't good enough! The most beautiful, social, well-connected, nicest girls are being cut too.
2. There is more at play behind the scenes than you know.
3. There are far fewer slots available in reality. This is a BIG one that people don't really talk about. At FSU, 98% of the Sororities are REQUIRED to offer bids to Legacies and there are a LOT of Legacies. So let's break this down by the numbers. There are over 2000 girls rushing and about 100 slots per house. 25-50 will be taken by Legacies in the top 6-10 houses. Add another 15-25 for girls with Recs. Now add in the Upper-Classman quota and what you have left is about 25-30 slots for the average Rusher. So if you divide 2000 girls by 30, you come up with a 1.5% chance of getting a bid per house. The numbers are working against you.
4. Open your hearts to other houses than the top 5. You will end up much happier in the end.
5. Follow the "process" as far as you can then make a calculated decision of what's best for YOU. Remember if you sign a bid card you can't rush for another year & you can't accept Open Bidding.
6. Breathe.. It's going to be fine and Spring is right around the corner :)

There's a HUGE margin of error in your assumptive figures

Please explain "Lol"/"Facts". For arguments sake, lets say I'm completely off (although I really don't think I am). Let's say each average PNM has a 15% chance per house (completely unreasonable), THE NUMBERS ARE STILL WORKING AGAINST YOU!!!! So don't beat yourself up, if you get cut.

The thing is that the actual math is really complex because it includes a billion variables like what you look like, what your grades are, whether you have friends in the house, whether you make a great impression or whatever. Plus it changes every day because you are cut by sororities as the week goes on. So your chance of being a Theta may be zero because they're not on your schedule but your chances of being a Chi O are 20% because they're one of five you have left.

If you are a legacy/have recs, your chances of ending up in a specific chapter are higher than another girl's odds of ending up there.

If you see the week through and maximize your options, your odds of ending up in SOME house are great.

Saying "out of 2000 girls only 30 who don't have recs etc. will become Zetas" is not the same as saying that any one person's odds of being a Zeta are 1.5% because that factor changes based on so many variables.

But the main point of this post is incredibly valid... stick it out, all the houses here are great for many reasons.

Great Post Numbahs! You have some really valid points that I didn't consider :)

I've listed for you a multitude of variables and information needed to come to that conclusion already. You are assuming numbers perhaps based on your house. You are not privy to how 16 other chapters make their selections and what criteria they use in making their final choices

You are right. I cannot know everyone and everything. These are very basic numbers, but the exact numbers are really not the point because I can use outlandish numbers and come to relatively the same conclusion that the numbers are working against the average PNM. The point of the post was to reassure PNM's that they aren't always to blame for not getting the house of their choice. I appreciate your thoughts and think its' important for PNM's to understand all sides of this. I've got to be up early tomorrow, so have a great night :)

So I'm a sophomore and have a rec for ADPi, Pi Phi, and DG, none for ZTA, am I theoretically having a better chance than just being "me" or like a regular rusher?

By: Upperclassman

It's nearly impossible to say what your chances are, because you are an individual. I don't think being an upperclassman gives you an advantage, I think the OP was saying that those are spots that WON'T go to any given freshman PNM.

But good luck!

Grandma is that you? Did you figure out how to work the internet and write this post? Because in this day and age all that stuff you posted about legacies, sorry just not true anymore. The rest of your advice is good though.

No not grandma must be a kd. We all know that 70% of their house are legacies who they hide

You are overestimating number of legacies taken. There are extra steps to cut a legacy, but they get all of the time if they are not a good fit.

Facts has very valid points
Another important factor to consider is that houses will drop legacies not tied to their own to open up opportunity to take other girls with no commitment issues. If I know a pnm has a sister in a house chances are we aren't keeping her around long because we know she will probably go there.

So being a legacy is a double edge sword

I get where you are coming from, but I think it strays from the original point which was that it's not an equal playing field for average PNM's. We can debate the actual numbers, but what we can't debate is that there will be a certain amount of legacies and rec-holders who will get priority over the average PNM.

Basically op is only right in that Rush is competitive
Bottom line the houses simply want what they consider to be the best fit for their chapter period and all the other legacy upper quota stuff is minor

Some chapters will have informal recruitment in the spring. Not all of them.

I guess we'll have to see what ends up happening in a few days. I can't speak for anyone else, but I can tell you that the legacy figures the OP used were close to what my chapter took last fall. I don't know how many people with recs we took. Anyone else know how their chapter's went?
