real talk for pnm's

By this time tomorrow there will be 100's of girls who will have been cut by their "dream" house(s). It happens every year and you won't be alone. If this happens to you by Saturday, I'd like you to come back and re-read this post.
1. Remember.... IT'S NOT YOU and you probably weren't cut because you weren't good enough! The most beautiful, social, well-connected, nicest girls are being cut too.
2. There is more at play behind the scenes than you know.
3. There are far fewer slots available in reality. This is a BIG one that people don't really talk about. At FSU, 98% of the Sororities are REQUIRED to offer bids to Legacies and there are a LOT of Legacies. So let's break this down by the numbers. There are over 2000 girls rushing and about 100 slots per house. 25-50 will be taken by Legacies in the top 6-10 houses. Add another 15-25 for girls with Recs. Now add in the Upper-Classman quota and what you have left is about 25-30 slots for the average Rusher. So if you divide 2000 girls by 30, you come up with a 1.5% chance of getting a bid per house. The numbers are working against you.
4. Open your hearts to other houses than the top 5. You will end up much happier in the end.
5. Follow the "process" as far as you can then make a calculated decision of what's best for YOU. Remember if you sign a bid card you can't rush for another year & you can't accept Open Bidding.
6. Breathe.. It's going to be fine and Spring is right around the corner :)

Remember this is not just any university. This is FSU which is known for their Greek system. Before you are quick to judge or "not feel comfortable" in a house, look closely! Top notch girls are in every house. There are geniuses, pageant queens, athletes and leaders in every house. Keep an open mind until the end.

You are right, this could be off a bit. I believe the actual numbers are closer to 2200 so I was using the 2000 figure to account for drops, etc. Let's give it the benefit of the doubt and say 2%. It's still a really low percentage.

You're assuming those 5 houses just because they were mentioned are the only ones wanted. Everyone knows they hard to get into that's a given.

Actually I believe I stated that this would affect the top 6-10 houses. But honestly, it would probably affect all of them to a large degree.

No. Again, please read what I said: I said 25-50 legacies. This a completely reasonable number taking into consideration past pledge classes combined with the amount of girls rushing. As I just stated, this isn't exact, but it's within a reasonable margin of error.

Usually the point of no return for a legacy is preffing at a house. If you pref somewhere as a legacy, most (not all) chapters are highly encouraged to put you at the top of the bid list.

You are right, there is a way a house can get out of the Legacy requirement. They would have to prove to regionals or nationals that the PNM in question is "unfit" for their chapter. One way this is done is to go over your social media and find questionable photos/posts. I'm not saying this was what happened to your friend, but it is a way out for some chapters. There is one chapter that I know of that doesn't have a legacy requirement. But most of them at FSU do.

No one is denying that Rush is competitive it is. But your math assumes way too many variables and is incorrect
Yes the pnms should be open to all but you know and I know you are only going to go where you really want to. If that's one of the top 10 great or the bottom 7 great too.

I'm not exactly sure what point you are trying to make. What variables are outside the margin of error? By all means, PNM's should rank where they feel the most comfortable. ALL of the houses at FSU are fantastic with amazing girls. That was my point. Don't just set your hopes on the top 5. Give ALL 17 a chance. The point I was trying to make was that if you get cut from one of the top 6-10 houses, it might not be entirely your fault.

Every sorority does their cuts differently so it's hard to answer your questions. Some cut gradually whereas I know one who cuts hard after the 2nd round. It also depends on how many each house is taking. Just because they can take about 100 girls doesn't necessarily mean that they will.

A Legacy is a direct relation to you (Mom, Sister, Grandma, etc) that is an Alumna of a sorority.

A legacy is a PNM with a mother, grandmother, or sister (or stepmother, stepgrandmother, stepsister) who is or has been a member of a sorority. There are also indirect legacies who are nieces etc. which will get you a bit of a second look but isn't emphasized by most chapters the way a direct legacy is. Your legacy chances are stronger if your sis/mom/grandma was a member at this particular school. Probably the strongest one is if you have a sister currently in a chapter at FSU. Your chances are super high if that is the case.
As far as I know most houses are not required to take any single legacy, but they are expected to take a decent percent of legacies who rush. Typically being a legacy will get you an invitation back to the second round, and if you are going to be cut it will be then or after third round before prefs, because once they pref you most will have to offer you a bid.
