Here are some tips that will help you along the way. WARNING! Do not get tricked into joining a house.
1. Ask as many questions as possible about their national organization.
------ You want to make sure the organization as a whole is healthy and prospering.
2. Ask them how many brothers are active, went alumn, and how many crossed last semester.
------You want to join a healthy organization. If they had 20 pledges and 10 crossed, that is a bad sign. RUN AWAY! You want to make sure they have a good retention rate because it means people actually have a great time in that organization.
4. LOOK AT THEIR COMPOSITES
----This is how you will be able to tell if they are lying. ALL fraternities take composites every year. You will be able to see if they have issues retaining members by simply looking at them.
3. Ask what the fraternity's goal is.
-----You want to make sure you're getting something out of it. You will be paying some good amount of money so it is worthless if they're just burning your cash.
4. Ask how many exchanges they had last semester.
-----Like i said, you will be dropping money on this, and social events are part of what your money is supposed to go to.
5. Ask when was the last time they had a formal.
----Formals take money and planning. If they never had a formal, maybe they don't know how to manage their finances or don't have enough money because of bad planning. You want to RUN AWAY!
6. Observe how the members of the organization act towards each other.
----You want to join a brotherhood, that is why you are rushing. You dont want to make sure you join a place where you will find that, not a place where it will be all drama.
7. Ask about their alumni, when was the last time they had an alumni event, and how many attended.
----Signs of a healthy fraternity are alumni and how many alumni attend their events. It means the alumni enjoyed their time in the fraternity and are willing to donate money. More money means more events and more possibilities.
8. Ask the members what has been the hardest part of being in their fraternity.
----Honesty is important, so test them.
Good luck! Remember, you are paying money so it should be about you having a great time and not about you having to regret your decision.
