awkward is cool

by: Awkward

Why do people post that certain sororities are "awkward" like it is a put down. This is Columbia not ASU- We are all awkward and nerdy - Who cares? I for one am proud to be an awkward nerd, and wouldn't have it any other way. If I wanted to be HOT I would have gone to San Diego State. Let's embrace our geekyness. Don't bash it. I LOVE being AWKWARD!!!

:/ being awkward is just having poor social grace, not something to be proud of.

I'm proud to be awkward. We are all a different flower in the garden. This is who I am.

Awkward =/= quirky, nerdy, non-conformist.

Being awkward means you make other people uncomfortable. Being awkward means you refuse to make eye contact, don't try to make other people feel welcome or at ease.

For a "nerdy" example: Luna Lovegood is quirky and eccentric but she isn't socially awkward. She might unintentionally make people feel uncomfortable, but it's precisely that: unintentional. In fact, she often goes out of her way to support her friends.

So no, stop saying "Awkward is cool!! Quirky girl who doesn't go to parties haha what r boys. Only drink tea and go on tumblr and greek rank!!! Special snowflake!!"

Stop it.

Yeah, being awkward, even though I can be awkward pretty frequently, is not the goal. Being a nerd, unique, etc, does not equal being awkward. sorrrryyyyy

No "Stop" does not have it right. "Stop" is a bigot and a hater.

Why should I stop being who I am? Obviously I'm not alone. Many people are awkward. We don't try to make others uncomfortable. We aren't like you. That doesn't make us wrong. Columbia is supposed to be about diversity. We are here. Deal with it.

You be who you are. It is the nasty piece of work called "Stop" that I want to avoid.

You know......one of the actual medical criteria to qualify for Aspergers Syndrome is to display signs of being "socially awkward." I know this because my brother is on the spectrum and I spent my life looking a medical paperwork and IEPs from the school. It isn't just a cute, flip word to throw around here on Greekrank. I have to say that it gets under my skin a bit that you are coming off so nasty about "awkward" people. People are who they are. If Greeks want to be inclusive , then engaging in NASTY name calling and putting people down for medical diagnosis is a problem, and sort of counter to the diversity that you claim to want. Awkward is fine. Nasty is not. You stop it!

You are right. "Stop" is a major hater. We can all guess that she is in one of two sororities. Thankfully most sororities at Columbia aren't as shallow as those two. Aspies and everyone is welcome in our Greek System.

p.s.- I love being awkward too.

You're right, "Rock it" I am a hater, I hate girls like you who pretend to be so deep and inclusive.

We all judge girls primarily on looks, then on accomplishments, and then on how much we like talking to them in formal recruitment. If you are AWKWARD you get cut from recruitment. We don't want girls who won't show up to mixers or act awkward standing on the sidelines getting plastered.

Sororities are SOCIAL groups, if you don't like being social, you shouldn't join one.

And I love how I'm a "bigot" because I don't like people who aren't like me, unlike you, but at the same time you can guess which sorority I am in. And you know what? I bet you can't.

Aspie has further proved my point, being awkward is not a cute, quirky personality trait it's an inability to understand how to respond to social cues in a graceful way. Once upon a time, people actually took etiquette classes to avoid awkward behavior and situations.

I just don't like it when girls like you romanticize it, do whatever you want.

I'm reading this whole thing and ""Stop" is just an unbelievable hater. I'm hoping that it isn't really a woman from our Greek System, but a bored 13 year old writing mean things. Whoever you are "Stop" you are the one with no social grace.

Add me to the list of fabulous women who love being awkward. I don't want to change. I have just as much right to be in a sorority as anyone else. I joined for civic service not to party.

You know what's REALLY awkward? Bashing girls anonymously online. If you don't feel threatened by AXO, why do you feel the need to put them down that way?

And don't even bother trying to put SDT on the same level as Theta and DG you're not fooling anyone.
