new sororites?!?

by:

Columbia needs more sororities. If 450 girls rushed and the quota is 43 then we would need to have more than 10 sororties so every girl gets a bid. I know that more people drop out then actually get cut from all houses but I know gphi and aopi cut more people and some got cur from all houses this year. Plus, if there were more competition then aopi and gphi would probably have an easier time retaining members and fewer girls would drop out because it would feel less like the top four vs the bottom default sororities. Honestly, if a new sorority marketed themselves really well with cute decor, themes, nice social media presence and philanthrophy, and good sisterhood I feel like they would be successful. I know Columbia is trying to limit greek life but they can’t ignore that having a system that has to cut or force 50% of the girls to drop negatively affects people’s self-esteem!

agreed it feels like everyone prefs the same sororities and most people get really similar rush outcomes there needs to be more variety

I so agree. We don’t have main sororities like KKG or Pi Phi either. Those are well regarded nationally and would have a good running start wherever they were founded.

Also, we have to realize we have two schools of girls rushing the same six sororities. Where else does that happen? Sure, Barnard is smaller but still, can’t believe we only have six.

Tri Delta and DZ are other ones we could have: Tri Delta is really popular nationally and DZ is in the top 3 of most chapters in the country. But yeah, KKG would be a great one and would have a head start.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it Columbia policy like many other schools that every girl who goes through recruitment gets a bid (as long as they maximize the number of options they put down?) The number of girls each house gets is (or at least used to be idk what happened this year if people got completely cut) determined by an algo so if more girls finished, each chapter woild keep more girls. In past years, having two few sororities hasn’t been an issue bc gphi/aopi couldn’t meet quota.

Also, no one is forced to drop, it’s just super sad that the culture at this school about greeklife makes people not want to join bottom sororities. Also regardless of how many houses there are, there will be a bottom and if there aren’t more girls finishing recruitment (ie no COB) it’ll be hard to institute new chapter...

It is true that if less people dropped the class sizes would be bigger! For example in 2017 the number of bids given out was in the 40s but last year was in the high 30s because there were 100 less PNMs. While it is possible to get cut from every sorority and does happen, it is unlikely. Each sorority is allowed to cut a certain number of people per day while still maximizing their options. The number they are allowed to cut is different depending on how popular the sorority is (not trying to say top and bottom because I think the best sorority is subjective to the experience different girls want, but it is quantitatively true that some sororities don't need to invite as many people back because they are more "popular" with PNMs). The girls who get completely dropped are likely part of the few that the less "popular" houses are allowed to drop, and this normally only happens if the sisters who talked to her had a very difficult time talking to her and genuinely think she would not be a good fit. Also, anyone who goes to preference night and maximizes their options is guaranteed a bid. No sorority can drop a PNM who goes to pref, they can only rank their choices. So while getting your first choice is not guaranteed, a bid is guaranteed from pref!
