my chances next year?

by:

I went through sorority rush after having lost 25 pounds. However, I knew I was still at a higher weight than most of the girls, and I ended up being cut after round one by every sorority I had any interest in. I was invited back by the two known for having "bigger girls" and I am sure you know who. Meanwhile, I saw the girls going into the other sororities and saw absolutely no one that was my size. For reference, I'm 5'3 and 130 pounds, but most of these other girls were a size zero. I ended up dropping out of recruitment because I know that I'm capable of showing a better version of myself next year. I hadn't thought that weight would be such a determining factor. I'm determined to be in those lines of skinny girls going into the sororities I deserve next year and not feel horrible about myself for being too big to get into anything desirable. Twenty more pounds to go and I should be golden right?

Please don't fixate on numbers too much, what matters is your confidence and your health.

Remember that the sororities (supposedly) gauge you based on your personality and how well you get along with them! I, too, was cut by 4/6 houses after philanthropy day, but in retrospect it was the right thing to happen to me because I got along way more intellectually and personality-wise with the two that called me back.

If you're happy and confident, that will show. These are the most important factors, and if a house cuts you because you don't fit their mold for appearances, do you really want to be pledging there?

hey girl, this was something I was absolutely consumed with when I went through rush (two years ago) as well. while I am welllll aware of what you're going through, remember the purpose of going through recruitment is to find a sisterhood, and sisterhood is people who will love you as you are, no matter what. for what it's worth, I have never even heard the slightest mention of someone's weight as a factor in recruitment during the time I have been recruiting. keep your chin up and it will all work out.

I'm so sad to hear this, as someone who has struggled with an eating disorder. First of all are you sure weight was the determining factor? Tbh I know bigger girls in every single sorority, not just two of them. They're definitely not all a size zero in any chapter. Don't join a sorority that you don't think likes you for you! It's not worth it!

don’t worry, I’m a size zero and was cut first too.

I'm in one of those houses you thought you deserved. It wouldn't have been about your weight at all but about your personality and how much we liked you and thought you'd fit in. Losing weight won't change that.

I'm in one of the ~two sororities with "bigger girls"~ that you ~didn't have any interest in~ and I find this incredibly problematic. I've been struggling with an eating disorder since my sophomore year of high school, I'm a 00, and im a model, and I'm someone normally be seen as a "tall, beautiful" girl, and never seen for the struggles and the personality behind the face/body. But I chose to be in my sorority because I love activism, women's empowerment, and I could tell that the women in this sorority genuinely care about my mental and physical health, and who I am inside. I'm friends with women in every chapter, and they're all friends with me not for how I look, but for who I am and how I act. I'm friends with beautiful, big, bold, bodacious women in DG, Theta, SDT, and AXO. Trust me, they exist, and they DONT judge you based on how you look. Nobody can ever judge /why/ they weren't invited back to a specific sorority. Sometimes there's more women that the initiated members already know, sometimes there's more legacys than normal, and sometimes you just don't click! You will never know. Normally, however, the policy is that if you got dropped once, you'll get dropped again. You can go through recruitment again, but women are extremely perceptive. They'll know why you're there, so unless you change your attitude about being in one of the other chapters, you're going to have the same experience. I suggest you talk to one of the councillors at Furman or CPS about what you're struggling with, and if you decide to go through recruitment again, I hope you can find a change in attitude. I'm sure we would all love to meet you again, and know that it has everything to do with your conversations and almost nothing to do with your appearance and weight.

I'm also (probably) in one of the two sororities you considered "undesirable," and I also struggled with an eating disorder. I was picked up by other houses on dev day but went with my chapter bc it was where I felt most loved and accepted. I want sisters who love me no matter what I look like. HOWEVER there are women like this in every sorority. No sorority is all size 0 and no sorority would ever bring up your weight in recruitment discussions. My mental health and self esteem have gone way up since joining my "undesirable" organization. My "undesirable" organization was my first choice all the way through recruitment, and I chose it over what you consider a more "desirable" house on pref night. Why? Easy. I know myself and I knew where I fit in, which I'm sure is the reason most women join the sororities they end up in. I know it's hard to admit that maybe you weren't invited back somewhere because of your personality, but it's not a personal judgment - sometimes you just don't click. I truly hope you can go through recruitment next year with a better attitude and more open mind, because the vast majority of sororities that dropped you will drop you again next year.
