rush is fake but we already knew
by: ughI went into rush having been told by everyone that “columbia greek life is different” and whatever but fake news recruitment has been the most superficial thing i’ve ever done and i can’t believe So many girls at columbia/barnard conform to this outdated process :/

recruitment sucks. it sucks for the girls in the sororitys too. no one likes the process. its quite literally the worst part of being in a sorority and no one looks forward to it. it's exhausting and miserable at times but then there are the girls you meet who just click with you and thats what makes the process totally worth it. you can't fake a connection with a sister but its literally their job to try to make you feel comfortable in the room, regardless of whether they thought youd fit in or not so of course its going to be at least a little bit fake.
its never until the days that girls are dropped that people get pissed off. its HIGHLY unlikely that you didnt get asked back to any sororities so perhaps you're the one who is being superficial? not everyone belongs in dg and theta and you cant fight it.
just because they (or whoever you wanted) were nice to you on the first day doesn't mean youre automatically a right fit for that sorority. the girls in the sororitys know what type of woman will feel comfortable with them in the long run and honestly, if you didn't get asked back, its more likely you'd feel alienated within that sorority later on anyways.
greek life is NOT defined by what recruitment is like. if you haven't grasped that concept and can't see the bigger picture, you've clearly missed something and greek life just probably isnt for you. but it is a home for other girls and its not your place to decide if they're good or bad people just because you're salty about it.

depends on the sorority... the first reply is right, that everyone hates recruitment and most people push through it just to push through it
some sororities have a pre-determined list, created by sisters based on previous interactions at parties, on social media, in classes, in clubs, etc... this list is often made even before winter break and definitely before recruitment, and if you're not on this list, you have no chance of being asked back even to the second day.
other sororities genuinely care about the connections made with people in the room, and try to make recruitment as genuine and enjoyable as possible for the pnms. if you want to be part of a sorority that isn't superficial, join one that doesn't practice this list-making process, and one where you have solid conversations with the women there, and eventually ask you back day after day because they see you there. that's it!

i think a lot of girls, unfortunately, go into recruitment hoping for the comfort of being associated with a “top” sorority, but as someone who never had their sights set on dg or theta etc i was incredibly frustrated to see smart, talented, and quirky women feel disheartened because they had genuine, engaging conversations with girls in some houses only to be cut. and because of what? because they don’t fit the house’s “look”?(and don’t tell me appearence doesn’t play a huge role here)? how can you possibly tell after talking to someone for 5 minutes? i wanted to join a sorority because i wanted a space on campus where i could meet and support other women, and recruitment for me just did everything wrong
