sorority expansion

by: news

So, apparently Arkansas is open for sorority expansion again. I wonder what's gonna happen this time since neither DZ nor AGD were selected. I wonder if they'll present again or if it'll be new groups.

My mom went to UofA when DG was still around. She was a Zeta, but had good friends who were DG's. She said they weren't BAD, but that recruitment was done differently back then (the houses didn't make big cuts till right before/after pref). She said about 1/4 of the girls would get cut then, but those girls had dropped DG, Theta, or Phi Mu the first round, when they HAD to cut three (and most house did not cut many girls-even ones they did not want-first round).

Was this when UA also had bed rush (like Indiana)?

No, my mom was at UofA in the late 70's/early 80's. They had a regular quota system, but several houses never made quota during recruitment, even though a ton of girls got cut at pref round.

Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta have had chapters at UofA before. DGs has a chapter at UofA-Fort Smith, Thetas have no other chapters in the state.

DZ is weak nationally and irrelevant at most campuses they are at except Texas State. APhi is super solid everywhere and nationally, plus, they are known for looks; they know how to colonize and jump to mid and upper tier fast; they would come in big/strong as they did at Ole Miss. Theta and DG crashed and burned at Arkansas before so that's gonna prevent them from EVER getting mid/top tier if they try again...(sorta like KD at Texas).

Are you kidding? Alpha Phi is very weak in the south, especially the SEC. APhi is only strong in California, and has trouble when they try to implement that style at a southern school. And being "known for looks" really isn't necessarily a positive thing.

DZ "irrelevant" - hardly. DG and Theta won't get "prevented" from anything. Two super strong, well known, national chapters with great alumnae support (and deep pockets for housing if that's part of the deal) and believe me Arkansas would be a great place for either chapter now. Girls today don't stay put in one place and having that national rep is important (whether you like it or not). Arkansas - get behind expansion and support any chapter that's lucky enough to get selected!

I think that we should give AGD a try. Their rep at most schools is pretty good, and the sorority is pretty solid nationally. Another probably less popular idea would be SK, which may have trouble but they are strong at some schools and I don't think they'd have too much trouble colonizing here.

I agree! Let's take AGD. They like to go on and off and on and off and on and off at most campuses, so if they can't make it, they will pack their bags and try again in a few years. You are the only one I've ever heard say they are strong nationally. Where do you get your info?

Top 3 at Auburn and Old Row at Bama -- but those are their only good chapters at big Greek schools.

Would well here they have strong chapters at both tennessee and LSU and have a strong local alum base to help with recruitment

I think it'd be important to get a sorority that has a good nationals and alumni support already in Arkansas. With that said, AGD, DZ, and (MAYBE) AST would be a solid choice.

AGD- good school to try at to expand their presence in the SEC. Has alumni in the area due to having such a strong presence on Arkansas State campus and no reputation to put them down on.
DZ- probably not that great in the south, but they're strong at UCA and have more than one chapter in the state so alumni shouldn't be that hard to get.
AST- I know they're number 1 at UCA and their alumni are really strong. I'm sure they wouldn't mind expanding to a bigger school even though nationals isn't that great. People looking at this may wonder why I would ever put them in the conversation, but it's kind of a safety net idea. None of the sororities at UofA are in the central Arkansas area. If you have one that is compatible, girls are more likely to try to go that sorority if it's in there home field because of the influence. Plus girls who do transfer will be able to continue their Greek life experience if going to UCA which a lot end of doing.

May be top at UCA, but they're so small and so weak nationally that it's doubtful they'd have the resources for a house and a colonization here. (Until a few years ago, they ran their national offices out of someone's house.) Plus UCA is literally their only good chapter.
