disappointed in our greek system
by: new lyreHave a friend that just had her Bid Day on Labor Day. She goes to a small, private school with only 4 sororities. After talking with her about her experiences during recruitment, I have to say I'm embarrassed by the remarks on this site; and also by some of the stuff that goes on here during recruitment. Her school's recruitment is a lot more low key, and she said that every sorority genuinely likes the other chapters....none of the petty jealousies that exist here. None of the "tent talk" bashing other sororities-like what I heard here. It is not as competitive a recruitment as here, obviously, but girls do get cut and many do drop out after being cut from their favorite. But there is none of the ranking/tier system there, which is so prominent here. There is one sorority there that is considered to be slightly more undesirable, but I never heard anyone say that they would rather drop out than join that one. And their new girls seemed to be just as excited on Bid Day as my friend's sorority. Wish my school would be a little more like them.

If that's what you want, then go there. When there are 1,598 PNMs going through and you can only take 130, there are bound to be some harsh words and hurt feelings. We have to do tiers here so that newer chapters get a chance to grow their numbers. It's simply business, and you can't take it personally. We compete during Recruitment, but at the end of it, I know that I have friends as close as sisters in houses across the Hill.
