Greek affiliations

by: jbajv

im a freshman at uark and want to rush this fall. 1. how good of a chance do i have getting into a top house and 2. i have literally no greek affiliation at all. almost none of my family even went to college and i am feeling extremely discouraged to even rush this fall with nothing. should i just not even try or should i just go for it? by the way my family all of a sudden came into lots of money a couple years ago (still confused how that even happened) and i heard money is pretty important to get into a top house so im good on that front. any tips on what to do here or should i just give up?

You say that you are a freshman, which means that you are already here and that you probably know people in houses you could ask about rushing as a sophomore. Did you mean accepted as a freshman for this fall?

You also did not say fraternity or sorority, but either way, bids are not decided based on Greek affiliation or how much money your family has. Your focus on these things and 'get into a top house' shows a real lack of awareness as to the rush process, how sororities and fraternities select their members, and the fact that every house here is good. Getting a bid to any of them would be great and you can do that if you change your focus to promoting yourself as a potential member properly. What do you have to offer that would make a house want you?

Yep I’m pretty uneducated which is why I’m asking! None of my family has ever gone to college or been in a sorority or know anyone in a sorority so I think it’s okay that I’m asking questions. I’m currently a freshman here, and haven’t made any friends which is why I want to join a sorority. The only things I know about Greek life is from tik tok, so I don’t need anyone bashing me for “not knowing” things. I’m just trying to figure everything out. Thanks.

Your questions were answered about Greek affiliations and having a lot of money, no and no, they don't matter, and you were encouraged to rush. But again, what do you have to offer a sorority to make them want you? Grades? Achievements? Leadership? Personality? A great personal style or ravishing beauty? Why would they want you? Because being a poor little first generation college girl whose family now has lots of money is going to take you nowhere in recruitment. You really have no friends here and no one in a sorority would know you or recognize you at all from classes, dorm, acquaintances of acquaintances, no one at all? Because these girls could answer your questions and help you out.

Also, using quotation marks is for quoting something word for word, not for making up your own words and putting quotes around it. Nobody said “not knowing” things in the comment above. An actual college freshman should know better. Definitely a "lack of awareness".
