What were rankings like in the past?

by:

I’ve always wondered if sororities have been this rank/tier driven or if social media had a lot to do with it. Alums from before social media (I know you’re on here lol) how were ranks back then?

I graduated in 2013 - the ranks were roughly

Chi O, Kappa, Tri Delt
Zeta, KD, Pi Phi
AOPi, ADPi

Those new houses weren’t around yet, or it was their first year, so it was too hard to tell where they’d fall.

As I was graduating PhiMu and AChiO were announcing their plans for their new houses and had participated in 2 recruitments. They were also easy to determine because Greek life was using a variable quota system based on chapter size and retention rates. Tiers were as follows
Chio/Kappa, PiPhi- all taking 100-110
Zeta, Tri-Delt, KD- all taking 125- 140 in that order
Phi-Mu/AOII- taking 150+
ADII/AXO- also taking 150+ but generally less desired in recruitment and had to take more from COB.
I really wish Greek Life would add more chapters. I feel like it made all of the lower houses and new house new desirable because every PNM felt differently about weather they were excited about joining a new house or being part of a longer tradition.

Wow so no wonder why these Tri delt alums are pissed. Two years ago when I went through everyone I asked on campus said zeta was above them and they were equal to KD. So in the past KD was ahead of pi phi?? So how did pi phi move up like that?

No
Kappa, Chi O and Pi Phi have always been the top three houses.

So according to 2023 ranks PiPhi & ADPi have improved the most, I wonder what it took to level up?

KD was not ever ahead of Pi Phi. Are you kidding or trolling? If UArk added more chapters, nobody would want them, they would still want the more prestigious groups.

There were no tiers, but going back to late 90's there were always perceptions. It was different because it was somewhat based on perception, however I'd say Chi O, Pi Phi, and Kappa were def top 3 no question.

Everything else was somewhat muddled together. Back then it really was based on what Fraternity you got paired with for events and such. Greek system back then was completely different in general from what I read on here.

Since it being so word of mouth based, a few good PC's could easily tip the popularity ratio. Based on what I've seen following social and on here (DG for example) would be up to mid. But since it's all based on hard numbers/ranks year after year, it doesn't change as fast IMO.

There was also a lot more in state students I believe back then and the school in general only had about 15k students. Back then an OOS freshman would have less desire to go to the top houses with all in state girls.

So there were top houses, but it wasn't like it is now. Keep in mind during my tenure we went from literal mailboxes, to optional school emails, to every student having an email when I graduated lol. Wild times...

I’d say it looked like this in the early 90’s.

PiPhi/XO/ Kappa/Theta
KD/AXO/GPhi/Zeta
PhiMu/ADPi/DDD/Delta Zeta

DZ left around ‘92 I think.

AOPi & AZD weren’t at OSU then.

Because they couldn’t get enough girls. Which is what’s going to happen here if people don’t stop with the immature ranking and having PNMs wonder if they should even pledge a lower tier house even if they love it

The way it worked back then was completely different. You just took the girls you wanted with no quotas. So you would see pledge classes with 50 and some with 10. Obviously cannot survive with smaller pledge classes.

I don’t remember all the details but really do remember feeling bad for sorority’s that had small pledge classes.

Back then it had very little to do with any rankings and the houses earned their keep at Rush. Those big houses had tons of history and experience and had it down to a science like everyone does nowadays.
