Understanding the word "TOP"

by:

Everyone needs to understand the timeline of each sorority's established date at UofA to understand this whole "top" thing, aka hardest to get into. "Top" in reality means, been at UofA longer and as a result has that much more alumni support and has built many more connections. Rush at UofA can be VERY HUMBLING especially for OOS girls, but understand the longer the sorority has been at UofA the more UofA legacies/connections exist to fill their spots. This is why sometimes you'll see some girls that don't fit a sorority's mold, well they are most likely a UofA legacy or STRONGLY connected to that particular sorority and just like that they're in. Then you are left feeling like, what is wrong with me? NOTHING! Nothing at all! You could be amazing but when there are not enough spots there's just not enough spots. Hope this makes sense. Keep an open mind and remember this experience DOES NOT DEFINE YOU!

Phi Mu left before 1995, they reestablished in 1978, I think then left again in 1995.

I would like to know exactly why they left (1978) came back and left again (1995) and then came back (2012). I know they take rep risks “if they have the look” but surely they haven’t always done that.

by: Why They Left

The reason so many sororities left in the late 1980's/1990's was numbers. RMF was not in place. The top houses did not have to make big cuts at the beginning and could keep inviting back as many girls as they wanted each round. The PNM's, however, DID have to cut houses each round, which caused the lower houses to have smaller groups each round.
According to my aunt (who was an active at the time) a lot of girls would get cut on pref night (you were not guaranteed a bid if you went to pref's back then).
She said Tri-Delt was the worst for bringing back "filler girls" to make their parties huge (with the girls they wanted getting special attention). There was also a LOT of bid promising that went on, with girls getting cut because they thought they were locked into a house and dropped houses where they might be a good fit.
Apparently it was brutal.

KAT plus any other sorority will never come to UofA, it’s just too competitive here. Sad but true.

So longest means top??

By: Kim
by: Freshman

Longest means fewer spots to fill which makes it harder to get a spot.

Wish everyone would understand this timeline thing, as frustrating as it is, the years at UofA do matter.

Kim, yes. The houses that have been here the longest will always be considered the top houses. Will never change either until Patrice stops her blatant favoritism of them (esp towards chi o)

Think of top this way — they’re the Regina Georges that no one really likes

Literally “rankings” are oldest to newest because it’s hard to make up that time.
