First round truths

If the first round is based on houses looking at pnms' videos and applications (if they even look at the resumes), how are pnms supposed to try to make any connections for first impressions? It seems like an uphill battle for pnms who don't know anyone.

It is an uphill battle. Period. Your resume most likely looks similar to atleast 40 to 50 percent of the other pnm’s even if it’s fabulous. I will say if you’re cute with a fun personality in your video you will probably be given another look and your resume looked at more closely. Not getting cut by the top houses first round is a real struggle at uark if you do not know a soul. Depending on the numbers Panhellenic gives the houses for first round cuts you may have a chance at a zeta invite back. I say depending because I think they had a better than normal recruitment last year with bama rush happening right before so the numbers may look different this year. That being said …. It is my opinion their are so many other houses at uark to focus on who care about the “top four”

Hey zeta person, you didn’t get to meet your rush crush until the second round. Someone selected the list PNMs to make it out of the first round before they ever walked through the door. The original poster wants to know how that can even happen. I’m guessing it’s more complicated that you think.

Lots of girls in my group were cut from zeta round one and I know for a fact the girls in my group that had them on bid day knew people in the house so I think the girl making it to the end with no connections is pretty rare.

Zeta is a top house. If anything kappa is falling and pi phi and zeta and rising because of it

Connections are important but it’s not impossible to get a top house without them. You may have a hard time fitting in with all the cliques though

^ I didn't take it as someone trying to scare off pnms. I think it is more just telling them the reality of recruitment. It would have been nice to know these things before I went through. It might have saved me from crying my eyes out and thinking something was wrong with me.

Here’s my opinion — if you need connections to be in the sorority and you don’t have any, then you probably don’t really want to be in that sorority.
If you need connections then that means the girls in it had connections, which means they knew each other in high school or from camp or whatever. Which means it would be harder for you to break into friend groups because you don’t know anyone. Make sense?

Just be yourself. In honesty you’ll prob be cut if you don’t have any connections even if your resume and video are incredible.
But like the person above said, it really is hard to be in a sorority where you need connections unless you already have connections. Not just that it’s hard to get in but once you’re in it’s super difficult to break into the cliques that were formed years before. Most girls I’ve known that were OOS or no connections that got into those sororities dropped

They all look at grades. Also be aware that just because you have a 4.0 does not mean houses won't cut you. My roommates and I all had above 4.0 and were cut from the top four houses after the first round.

They know they’re wanted and getting a bid already because they’ve already been in Fayetteville and having sleepovers in the house with actives. Also because their moms are alums and have paid lots of money all these years to ensure their daughter gets in.
Rush for KKG and Chi O is really just a show.
Their bid day lists are set already…maybe a spot or two open for an incredibly awesome girl who really impressed them.
There will be someone who says this isn’t true, but they are lying.

That cannot be true.
I know a lot of girls from TX who did not come here for weekend visits and they are in the top houses.

@no then I bet they had in house connections or their mom made a special call.
True girls get in that don’t go to the house or get invited to things — especially OOS girls obviously. But the point is very very very few girls get in that knew no one. Like 1%
And honestly most of the few that get in without connections then hate it or drop because they don’t have connections and it’s hard to get in to friend groups because everyone else is connected in some way

THIS is what I didn’t really get as a pnm. If you need connection then that means most everyone else is already connected. Sure there are some that find friends easily but the majority of no connection forks that get into connection needed sororities end up dropping because they don’t feel like they fit into the pre made cliques

My house has many out of state members and I made friends right away with my pc. The girls across the hall from me went top houses and both dropped at semester. They did not feel connected and could't break in to the already formed friend groups from high school.

Zeta is the only “top” house that truly wants to find the awesome girls DURING recruitment. We love cutie girls with a fun personality. I am going into my junior year and we are not allowed to simply pick our high school friends. Sure we can recommend and rush friends if we want (doesn’t mean we can get them in as other people have to vote on them) but our recruitment team does a great job of finding awesome girls over the summer and connecting them with similar people during recruitment. I loved zeta when I rushed even more after I saw how they did things on the other side of recruitment.To say we loved our pledge class is an understatement.This is not to cut down any other house. If you have friends in chi o go for it! But I don’t like seeing zeta lumped into top four must have connections situation because the girl I rushed last year had none. I just fell in love with her the second I met her during recruitment! Truthfully though all houses have amazing girls. Don’t be scared of rush. Just have fun and you will find girls just like you no matter which house is yours on bid day.
