What is a top house, exactly? It’s a house that has a high volume of Arkansas & Dallas girls. It’s a house that has huge day 1 cuts eliminating 3/4 of the 2,200+ PNMs before day one. Why? Because that’s how UARK does it so girls don’t get their hopes up and drop rush. The majority of PNMs that make this 1st initial cut are connected in some way. Of the let’s say 300+ girls working rush it’s safe to say (that between them all) they personally know close to 200 PNMs of the 2,200+. Also they have a higher alum support because they are mostly from Arkansas & Dallas (closer than let’s say Chicago). It has nothing to do with your looks, bank account, resume, rush outfits, etc. It’s just math!
What’s a mid house? Houses that have a bigger out of state presence. It’s harder for them to compete because they can’t cut as many pnms Day 1, making them work that much harder. We’re talking all the NRTA scholarship girls like 6 states that’s a lot of ground to cover to personally know 200 PNMs. So these houses do rely on the conversations/connections and resumes to get NM girls. These girls aren’t uglier or poorer or dumber they simply don’t know anyone or enough girls to pull for them. Again it’s just math!
What’s a bottom house? Houses that have to work a lot harder than everyone else because they can’t hardly cut anyone. So instead of rushing 500+ PNMs (like top houses) they’re rushing over 1,500 PNMs. These are also houses that are fairly new or just are having bad luck with member retention.

Top houses can't afford to "drag along" anybody like that because they have to release so many. If you are invited you are liked. Many great girls get cut who would be wanted in top houses but the invite-back numbers rule. Cutting certain girls causes a lot of hurt feelings in top houses too, believe it or not. Actives get invested in their favorites and it's really hard when they don't come back.

It is not super common for top houses to drag girls along! The issue is when you make it to pref but just are not high enough on their list to secure the bid. If the pledge class is 200 ( or close to that number like last year) they will invite back around 400. They do this because not every girl will choose their house and they don’t want to be handing out snap bids at the last min. Rumor was this happened to kappa last year but again that’s just a rumor. A snap bid would mean the pnm was cut the night before pref but they extend you a bid because they do not meet quota on bid day. They invited back 400 and quota was 196. Only 194 chose them first on pref list so they hand out two snap bids to meet quota. It’s a bit more complicated than that ( like who would get offered the snap) but that’s the gist.
These are super rare but it does happen. I go to uark but my older sister went to bama and it happened to them three years ago. She was in a top house.

Can we stop with the top and bottom ranking. "top houses" are houses that have been on campus forever. "bottom houses" are the new chapters to campus. All houses are great old and new. All houses have great girls, houses, philanthropy and work hard on campus. All houses have retention issues at one time or another. Have you ever thought that this page could contribute to retention - saying a house has a "mean girl" reputation, will take anyone or is a "bottom" house. Let's build each other up. Be supportive of the "newer" houses. They work hard and are proud to be part of the UofA greek life. PNMs - you will find what you are looking for at any house on campus.
