To pnm’s from a senior

by:

I’m going to start off by saying I rushed a middle tier house and had zero connections with any chapter here. I also have a strong grasp of the workings of behind the scenes during rush. I was pretty naive before rush. Honestly didn’t know too much about it. I assumed I had a decent chance at any house for a bid. I checked all the boxes: good grades, involvement, personality, money, looks (I hate this matters but it does). The thing is almost every girl coming through recruitment checks all of these boxes. Top houses here already have their bid list made before rush. You know if you have one. You could have a childhood best friend in a house doing everything they can do pull for you and still not make the cut. Sophomores don’t have much pull in the scoring, so if you get cut from your friend’s house it more than likely was a numbers game. Your only bet is having connections w girls on the recruitment team (I believe the no contact period with pnm’s have started, but who actually follows that). Houses have limits on how many girls they can bring back each round. Rush is intense here and I feel as if it will only become more competitive and each pledge class will continue to be huge if Greek life does not do something. Not trying to scare anyone just keeping it real. Be engaged in every conversation you have, even if it’s a house you don’t think you’re interested in. Girls know girls in other houses and they WILL talk about you. Don’t get your mind set on a house. A lot has changed since I rushed. Majority of the houses here are excellent and every house has their issues. Sometimes I do regret joining my house for the “status” and often wonder what opportunities I would’ve had if I joined somewhere else. Don’t get caught up in the status of a house, by the time you’re a sophomore no one cares. My friend rushed a top house but struggled to make those close friendships (not a dig at top houses I promise). Although she feels she doesn’t fit in she’s thinks, “Well at least I’m a ___.” Which is sad because it shouldn’t be like that. Truth is the letters you wear will not matter in 5 years. Every sorority has fun sisterhood events, functions, Phil events, etc. Guys won’t like or dislike you based on your chapter (if they do you’re hanging out w the wrong guys). Dues/fees/extra Greek life things will add up no matter where you join. Truly go into rush with no expectations. Just be well prepared and have fun with it. What you get out of this experience is what you make of it.

That’s sad that your friend thinks that way — just because a house is top here doesn’t mean it is everywhere. I know a big sec school where XO is the bottom.
If she’d gone where she felt happiest, not luckiest, she prob would have had a completely different and better experience.

No sorority is top everywhere, especially in the SEC.
Pi Phi is top here but mid at Alabama.
KD is mid here but top at Ole Miss.

What SEC school is Chi O bottom? I know they are middle tier at some SEC schools.

Chi o is considered a bottom house at Vanderbilt, so not as big of a greek life school but still in the SEC

My sister goes to Vanderbilt and is in a top house. She said Chi O is considered a mid house.
Maybe it was lower before?

My sister and a bunch of friends go to A&M. Chi O might not be the very bottom (ahem. Kappa) but they’re super close.

Sophmores have a major pull in who gets a bid so it surprises me you made that comment and am curious what house you are in. I am also going to be on recruitment team for the second time as a senior next year and will not dispute we have a lot of influence on who gets a bid however we want our sophomores to get their littles and to be happy with the pledge class below them so why wouldn’t we want to give them power over who makes it? Only chi o has a pretty set list of who is getting a bid on bid day. And by set I mean like 85 percent. There is still a 15 percent chance someone really impresses the right person during recruitment. Unless you have friends in chi o don’t pledge them though. I also have a very good friend that did that and she isn’t in any of the major cliques and basically pays to wear the letters. Sad.

What Jenna said is true.
PNMs don’t go chi o unless you already know you’re getting in. If you make it in as one of the 15%, not knowing anyone you’ll have a hard time fitting in.

Chi O is not very strong at Vanderbilt, Florida, or Texas A & M. They struggle for mid-tier status at UT and Bama. They like to self-rank. No one goes to these schools saying they want Chi O. If they get it, fine, but it is not a top choice. Also, their house at Ark is not nearly as amazing as so many of the other newer and nicer houses on campus.

Chi O is OR and in the top tier at Alabama. No disputing that one. I don't know about the other schools you mentioned.

Chi O is top at Bama and Texas.
The house at Arkansas is a historical landmark so you can't tear it down and rebuild like Tri Delt and KD did.
