Honest question about retention rates
by: SB
Why do retention rates matter?
If ABC can cut 1000 girls first round and FGH can cut 500 then ABC is gonna look like it’s more popular. Never mind the fact that those same 1000 girls they cut actually might have ranked them on the bottom.
Shouldn’t panhellenic look at who PNMs rank lowest to determine rates for the following year?
There’s no way certain “top” houses are ever going to be considered bottom if they are always given huge cuts and no one bothers to see that a lot of those cuts were mutual.
A sorority can be not liked at all and have PNMs rank them low but it’ll never matter because the retention rates are going to look good because of the huge cuts they are given.

For round one, here is the scenario (keep in mind that pmns pick our top 8 and then try to release our bottom three:)
99.9% of pmns want to keep kappa, chi o, and pi phi for the next round, and over 80% of the same pmns want to drop axo, dg, and aoii.
Kappa, chi o, and pi phi cannot keep all those pmns, so panhellenic makes them cut about 70% of them first round.
Since so many pmns are dropped from the top three houses after day one, they seem really exclusive so the ones who are invited back feel like it is something to be proud of. We know after the fact that it is all about connections and has little to do with gpa, school activities, or leadership. (made a lot of pmns in my group mad that they spent so much time working on a resume)
Unless a very large percentage of pmns rank the top three houses low, these top ranks will not change.

I totally get what you’re saying but as much as this site leads everyone to believe that the tops are hated and PNMs see through their lies and rank them bottom, that’s just not true. The majority of PNMs aren’t looking at this site, they’re just hearing from their friends that so-and-so is the top house and they should want them, so they’re probably putting them higher up regardless.

This is a good summary of how it works and why. Also the realistic ranks thread does explain it too.
