advice for 2023 pnms that i wish i had
by: New mem
i know it might seem early to post this but i was looking at GR the summer before senior year so i thought i’d catch some of the 2023 pnms before they got too deep on this site.
don’t think that actives or even people on exec following you back on insta means a thing. they can and will still cut you first round
connections aren’t always a good thing! a girl who might not know you very well or thinks you wouldn’t be a good fit might tell her sorority to pass on you
your high gpa and good resume won’t get you into a top house unless you’re a super successful pageant girl or cured cancer or something else very extraordinary.
being athletic is very important for some reason. i was choir president but it wasn’t considered as impressive as being an average high school dance team member. one girl even asked me why i wasn’t in athletics.
connections are becoming much more important in DDD and Pi Phi than ever. you probably won’t get a bid from the top 5 (except ZTA) without connections or being a legacy.
give the houses you tried to drop another chance. most of the time, they pleasantly shock girls who come back
don’t listen to what other PNMs are saying and don’t be that girl talking about what houses you got back or how you love or hate a house. stfu.
getting rec letters from recent uark alums helps a lot! still didn’t get pi phi or chi o back after first cuts with those though. however i had a rec from a recent alum of the sorority i ended up in. if that helped i wouldn’t be surprised (mid tier house)
boys don’t care what sorority you’re in. they just care that you’re hot.
bring different colored bottoms to match with the t shirts! panhellenic may release the designs for some of them but not all (you get a new shirt each day)
rankings don’t matter after recruitment and especially not in the real world
don’t SIP! If you do, you won’t be eligible for quota addition for either sorority. the system will try to make you a quota addition for your first choice. according to national panhellenic, 85-95% of PNMs get their first preference
if an active asks you if you have any questions, never say no! it comes across as disinterested. always try to think of a question
kappa, pi phi and especially chi o haze. the other sororities won’t haze you unless you ask them to.
ZTA is probably the most “attainable” top house meaning that if you fit their vibe and have great convos you have a decent chance. less connections based. even less connections based than tri delt.
recommendation letters still matter. without them, expect to be cut by chi o, kappa, pi phi, tri delt, and possibly ZTA, kd, and adpi (i didn’t have a rec for ZTA but i survived first cuts) getting rec letters from recent uark alums helps a lot! still didn’t get pi phi or chi o back after first cuts with those though. however i had a rec from a recent alum of the sorority i ended up in. if that helped i wouldn’t be surprised (mid tier house)
unfortunately, if you don’t click with the girl you talk to, you will most likely be cut. i hate that it works that way but just try to find common ground with every girl you talk to. on the flip side, you can still be cut even if you have great conversations. the chapters can’t keep every girl they like.
don’t name drop an active that you know in the chapter. They probably already know you know them and it can be awkward. They might not know the girl you bring up very well (i meet girls in my srat daily)

last thing bc i hit the character limit
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
pick a new favorite each round! the one i wanted all summer cut me before philanthropy and it sucked. i found a new favorite once i visited the houses during philanthropy and i got a bid from them! don’t lose hope! i realize now that i would probably be an outcast in that sorority.
i probably will bump this every few weeks but to be honest with y’all, i don’t give a crap about GR anymore. no one on campus talks about it.
pnms, keep your grades up, get involved, and don’t stress! the house you think you want isn’t all sunshine and rainbows!

agreed! Zeta was the only top house I had left for philanthropy and I kind of wanted to cut them but I could only cut one and i liked that house less than zeta. the zeta girls were so sweet but i could tell that i couldn’t keep up with their energy every day and i wouldn’t fit in there. They cut me after that but the girls that rushed me saw me during game day and said hi! so sweet truly

If you are oos and don't have any connections with sororities at UArk, do not drop ADPi, AXO, AOPi, or DG before philanthropy. Trust me when I tell you these are the houses you are most likely to get a bid from. It doesn't matter how good your grades, resume, volunteer hours, or rec letters are. Like mentioned above, it doesn't matter if exec follows you on Insta. If you don't have a direct connection with girls in sororities/alumni, it is much harder to get a bid (except the 4 houses mentioned above will take girls with no connections).

I love what you said about don’t read too much into girls following you back or even commenting. I did and boy was I shocked when I got cut.
I was super surprised by some houses I loved that were ranked low on here.
There were lots of sad girls pref day when zeta cut them. Yes some girls got a bid that didn’t have connections but for sure they have a “type”. Just saying don’t expect a bid from them if you either don’t have connections or don’t fit their vibe.
I cut pi phi early and know other girls that did as well. Don’t be afraid to cut a top house!
Be ready to be happily surprised by how many houses you really like! It takes the pressure off of thinking you will only happy top tier. My roommate is a kappa and I know I am much happier in my mid tier house! So many awesome girls that have made me feel welcome!
