Why retention rates don’t matter

by:

Panhellenic gives chi o the biggest cut number night one because they say they have the highest retention rate during recruitment. Here is where I see a major flaw in that argument. If they are told to release 15 to 1600 night one than logic says they will be ranked low by pnm’s at a far lower rate than a “newer” house simply because those pnm’s never even had a chance to rate them low after round one when you only rank three houses at the bottom. Houses that keep ending up on peoples schedule have numerous times to be ranked low by pnm’s. Ofcourse it is obvious when you give a high cut number night one they have the appearance of being super exclusive and unattainable leaving pnm’s to simply see how far they can take chi o before they get cut. I know this because that is what I did last year. I did not take them to pref and will never know if they were going to cut me that round or not. I had a very loose connection in the house. Even with knowing her and seeing her once at the beginning I was confused why I still at their parties with most girls in my group cut early on.

You’ve really given this a lot of thought.

Hi. @wow yes I have probably spent way too much time thinking about this being on the other side of recruitment. I am in a mid house and if we want to cut more girls first round we have to pay a fine. How is that fair? It just makes me think it’s almost impossible for ranks to ever change here. Which is fine but some houses clearly have to put in a lot more effort just to have pnm’s give them a chance. Not to mention instead of trying to sort through 6 or 7 hundred pnms after round one some houses are dealing with more than a thousand on top of that. The whole thing just seems unfair. I have nothing against chi o. It’s more about being sad other houses have to work so so much harder.

Idk- the houses that didn’t cut 1000 pnms the first round had a successful recruitment. Did you see the comment above this post?

There are new members in the historic houses not feeling it.
Who cares about retention rates.

Having a founding chapter on campus affects everything and I would guess other present founding chapters around the country have similar issues during recruitment.
Why would anyone want to pay a fine just to appear more exclusive?
Just wish XO the best and move on. Have to respect a mother ship- even if it isn’t yours.

No where did she say she didn’t respect chi o nor did she say her house cut more girls just to have the appearance of being exclusive? Simply that they would have to pay a fine. Obviously it’s more work for houses that have much larger amounts of pnm’s going into a round. Think about about the numbers of parties they have to have and exhaustion of in house members at the end of a 10 hour day of parties versus 6. When you cut more pnm’s the number of parties and actual amount of conversations go down. Not sure there is a solution but also believe this could be the reason no new houses want to come to uark. It for sure isn’t because there isn’t enough money to go around. I can’t imagine how much money each sorority pulls in at uark currently.

This makes total sense. As a NM I know a LOT of girls in my GX group ranked many of the top four lowest before philanthropy. I think everyone ranked at least one and I know a couple who ranked two (chi o and kappa) as lowest.
But that won’t ever go against their retention numbers because it was a mutual cut.

What house did you end up going?

@Ooo not sure if you mean me the original poster but I went phi mu. Almost didn’t say it because we always get so much hate on here and I am positive no one will believe I didn’t take chi o to pref but I did not. Like I said could have been mutual but I will never know because I got both my first and second choice for pref

New alum here that used to be on a membership selection committee….I think you all are confusing retention and release figures. Retention is how many girls stay year to year or drop their sorority from Bid Day to Graduation.

Release Figures Management is a National Panhellenic thing where the campus Panhellenic keeps the statistics on how many PNMs rank houses as number 1 (to keep) vs number 2-4 in order (to drop).

Every house is given a specific number that they should invite to each round based on the PERCENTAGE of PNMs that rated them #1 during that round in previous years. So if 95% rated ABC as #1 after philanthropy and 67% rated XYZ #1, then the following year XYZ needs to invite proportionally more than ABC to that round.

All the chapters should invite the number that they are told to invite to each round. If they want to invite more or less than Panhellenic suggests, they pay a fine to do so because it affects the overall bid rate for the week.

Interesting! I wonder what will happen next year? This year the pnm’s just ranked bottom three each round. The only time there was every a number one was going into pref. I think that is so much more fair for the houses and less stressful on the pnm’s.
