trying to make sense of SIP failure

by: Sad Dad

Our daughter didn't have a great rush. With a 3.7 GPA, she fell victim to a grade cut on day one. In the end, she was left with a "top" house ["A"] she really wanted and a house she continued to cut but they kept inviting her back ["B"]. Because she only wanted "A", she pref'd them #1 without a #2 (i.e. SIP) with our encouragement. To be sure, she understood it was house "A" or bust. She simply didn't feel house B was a good fit.

Long story short, she didn't get a bid from house "A". As I understand it, house "A" met their quota before reaching her on their list, i.e. she didn't rank high enough on house "A's" list.

Is there any scenario in which she would have caught a bid for house "A" had she pref'd house "B" as her #2?

There is no scenario. In fact because of quota additions there is an even greater chance it would have been sorority B.

Wrong, there would still have been a chance BECAUSE of the way quota additions work. When it gets down to that point, the pnm rank is favored and would have had a better chance of getting A over B. Not 100% chance, but a very good one.

Yes, there is that scenario. It is this: if both houses had her ranked too low to match with her before they reached quota, then she would have been placed as a quota addition at either house. The algorithm tries to place the pnm with her #1 ranked house if at all possible. At this point, she is eligible for a COB and needs to reach out to her #1 pref house right now and tell them that she wants a bid from them whenever they might be doing so.

^ based on what he wrote for sure her house that kept coming back on her schedule was either aopi or dg. before someone yells at me I hate writing that. I am trying to help this dad understand what happened to his daughter. Axo, phi mu, adpi, KD, ect….. did not have to keep going back on someone’s schedule that didn’t want them. Not all the way to pref. No way. Aopi and DG would not have reached quota before they came to her name. I just don’t believe that. And if quota additions happened in her favor and she recieved sorority A then she would not need to do COB. She simply would be in sorority A just like the rest of her pledge class.

How does COB work? Do the girls reach out to the house? The house reaches out to girls? The girls reach out to panhellenic? Girls reach out to Gamma Chi?
How does it work?
Also, do you see it being a possibility with such large pledge classes? If the house she put as (A) met quota is it still an option?

It is in the pnm's best interest to reach out directly to the sorority she's interested in (1st priority) and TELL THEM PERSONALLY THAT SHE WANTS TO JOIN, via the recruitment chair, and to also tell panhellenic that she's open to COB so she can be on their list for all the sororities who would be doing it. The Gamma Chi's are out of it at this point. She needs to be proactive about making her wishes known, and the fact that she got as far as pref with A is good because it means she was on their bid list somewhere. Continuous Open Bidding is for houses that either don't make Quota, or are under the Chapter Total Membership. If her fave house is under Total, they could offer her a bid. Something to keep in mind: COB is completely elective on the part of a sorority, and if they have a really huge membership they may not want to offer any more bids even if they are under the current Total. Chapter Total is reset every semester, and will be reset in the next few weeks by panhellenic, and there may be a push to set it lower because of the large sorority memberships, so that would mean even fewer openings. But she should go for it no matter what.

If needing a cob, Can they reach out to recruitment contact for a sorority that cut them at first or second round or can you only get COb from a house the girl preferences?

Technically a COB can go to anybody at all, but it would be very difficult to get one from a house that cut you early.

i am so sorry for you and your daughter. i hate hearing of this happening for anyone. i know your daughter would not have been cut on grades alone by that many houses unless it was a 2.7 not a 3.7 gpa. is that what you meant? if her gpa was 3.2 or better and she had huge cuts first round there would have been some other reason. connections inside a house is super important the higher up the ranks you go. an alumni with clout can get you past first round cuts as well. arkansas rush is not an easy process. the girls that don’t come prepared usually have a difficult time. so sorry again.

She did in fact graduate with a 3.7 GPA. The grade cut theory is merely speculation based on rumor of a GPA cut off at 3.7 and below.

She had zero connections besides a friend-of-a-friend inside house "A". And she had only met her once.

Your daughter has a great GPA and really I think too much goes into that anyway. There is so much that can happen during rush. Knowing someone in the house is important but you can still get cut even if you know some girls because it is so competitive. Girls will also get cut over stupid stuff like going out w someone's ex from years ago! They can just be overlooked because there are so many great girls that go through each year so they "fall through the crack." This has NOTHING to do w the pnm. They are all great girls! So-no, I do not think it would have changed anything.
