Question about getting a bid

by:

People keep saying that if you get to pref and don’t SIP, you get a bid. However, the handbook said that you are not guaranteed a bid at any time. can someone clear this up for me?

Don’t stress. Panhellenic can’t force a house to give a girl a bid. If they find out the girl is freaking out that their house was being run down by the girl and the girl thinks she is good for them they do not have to take her. Don’t do that and you will be fine.

If you go to pref and do not suicide bid you will get a house. I think she is saying don’t complain on pref day and act like you don’t want to be there if your choice is a house you don’t like. If you do do that then they deserve the right to not give you a bid and I am sure they could make their case to Panhellenic as to why. I have never actually heard of this happening though. There are only 11 houses here. Be respectful to all and happy to be a part of Greek life. Not every girl has that opportunity for financial reasons and others.

1) You are not guaranteed a bid for going through recruitment; 2) you are not guaranteed a bid from any house no matter how strong you think your connections are, including friends and alums and legacy, or how strong your grades and resume are, or even if you have a sitting sister and make it to their pref; 3) you are not guaranteed your number 1 choice at pref no matter what. You ARE guaranteed a bid if you attend pref and don't SIP (but there is always room for an exception if something goes terribly wrong with a pnm but this has never happened; it would have to be very very awful).

These responses are so confusing so YES if you are kind and pleasant to both pref houses and don’t SIP you will get a bid to one of them, may not be your first pick tho. On pref be sure to tell the houses that you really want that you really want them!

thank you for being so transparent with me! do i tell the other house that i like them but i’m not preffing them so i’m relatively lower on their bid list? or is that not how it works

No definitely do not do that! You don’t have to tell them that they’re your favorite house but you should continue to show interest in them and be kind. They may be the house you end up getting a bid from, and you don’t want the girls to think that they were second best and you get off on the wrong foot from day 1

Do not ever tell a house that they aren't your #1. You may end up there on bid day and be the girl who didn't want them and everybody will know it. Also, when a pnm says she is 'preffing' a house it means she is attending pref there, not that she is ranking that house first. "Who did you pref?" means where, not which one you liked better.

Eh I disagree, as a senior I’ve always said and heard “who did you pref?” And meant the house you put #1. I would ask “what houses did you have on pref?” If I was asking who they had

Panhellenic says that to protect themselves just in case a PNM breaks a rule before pref. If you show up to pref drunk, high, or someone find out you broke a rule, you could still be cut from recruitment for that reason.

still waiting for a clear answer on this question: if i tell my second choice that i think i found my home somewhere else, i’ll be lower on their bid list, and then i’ll be more likely to get into my first choice. not saying i will do this, just theoretically.

that's not how it works.

I get what you're saying and I don't know enough about the algorithm to tell you this wouldn't work, but I wouldn't rely on this plan. You may still end up in that house and you're going to start off with a lot of enemies.

It really depends where your number 1 house ranks you. If you are below the quota cut off for both houses you will be a quota addition and you could end up in either house.

Bid matching works like this:

You rank your houses 1 & 2, and the sororities rank all their pnm's in order on their bid list. The algorithm starts at the top of a sorority's ranked list and tries to match with the pnm's who put them at 1. If necessary, the algorithm makes another pass down the bid list and tries to match with the pnm's who put them at 2. The bid matching process for a house goes until they reach quota at whatever point in the process. If you are high enough on your 1's bid list to match before they reach quota you will get a bid from them. If not, the algorithm will try to match you with your 2. If you are high enough on their list to match with them before they reach quota you will get that bid. If you aren't high enough to match with them, you will be a quota addition to either house. The algorithm will try to place you with your 1, but will also consider your place on both bid lists and the number of quota additions to place. This is how you are guaranteed a bid if you rank both houses. If you SIP and you are not high enough on that house's bid list to match before they reach quota, you are out of the process and will not get a bid at all. No quota additions for SIP. If you only have one house at pref and put them on your card you will get that bid.

The first thing to remember is that you have a good chance at getting your 1st choice house, but of course could still get your 2nd. The second thing to remember is that the houses do not know how you rank them at any point in the process, so that's not any part of their consideration. The third thing to remember is that trying to get yourself ranked low by a pref house you don't want does nothing to get you ranked above the quota line at the house you love. Tell the house you love how you feel! Don't tell the other house that they are your 2nd because you may end up there anyway, but it's okay to be a bit ambivalent.
