Letters of Rec?

by:

How important are letters of recommendation actually? Does it increase my chances at all? I’ve heard multiple people on this site and in person tell me that they honestly don’t matter but I’ve just been so stressed out about rush week so I’m curious to know.
Here’s how my letters of rec go since I only accumulated 4 total
sorority A - 2 letters
sorority B - 1 letter
sorority C - 1 letter

Do these letters of rec truly matter?
And yes, I understand attitude, open-mind was, and conversations play a role but again, just curious on how effective a letter would be on increasing chances.

Thanks! (:

Are you under the impression that sororities pool and share all the recs? Because NO!

i really hope by saying she has three sororities covered she is not staying those are three of the four top houses. if so that is just plain rude you would not try for the other houses.

There are 11 houses and you got recs for only 3 of them, so it will certainly not help you at the 9 houses you didn't get a rec for. While a rec will never get you a bid, every little thing does help. If there is a group of pnm's that a certain sorority considers all to be equally good and desirable, which is always the case, and decisions have to be made to get down to their required number on the next round, it will come down to some kind of tiebreaker. What do you think that often is? Yep, who made the effort to get a rec for them and who didn't.

Everyone says recs aren’t a big deal because they really aren’t. They are more like a box to check and you should try to check all the boxes!
But, if they really want you they can get get a rec for you.

Is it normal for pnms to acquire a letter of recommendation from every house?

Absolutely! I’m shocked that girls going through recruitment don’t realize this.
It comes across to me as lazy to not find them.
I’m from oos, and didn’t have connections there, but I worked off and on all summer long to secure them.
I had one left that I was struggling with, but managed to secure one literally a week before rush started. That ended up being the house I got a bid to.

I should add, it’s common courtesy/proper etiquette to send a thank you to the women who took the time to write a letter for you.

It is easier now than ever to get recs because some sororities are allowing non-alum writers to submit them if they know the pnm well. So a teacher or counselor or coach or boss, whomever, could write one rec for a pnm and submit it to a few different sororities. Easy.

In my house girls with rec letters, especially letters from alum of our own chapter, were given higher priority than those without.

Most all houses can't offer a bid without a rec letter. That being said, if they fall in love with you during rush and you don't have a rec they will have an alum write one during rush.

Not true at all. read the updated letter or rec section on panhellenic.

@truth that's very not up to date. A LOT of nationals have eliminated the requirement for a rec to get a bid, although they still do accept them, and many are also allowing third party recs now too. Phi Mu doesn't even do recs any more.

I know what Panhellenic says but I also know how my house and many others still operate.

It's not up to panhellenic to determine any sorority's legacy policy. If a sorority national no longer requires a rec for a bid, then their chapters are no longer throttled in their membership selection. Phi Mu has gone so far as to not even accept recs anymore. In the end it is up to the chapter, but any chapter that continues to cut indiscriminately just for not having a rec is going to be left behind in getting better classes.

Please try to find at least 1 letter for each house except PM (who no longer accepts letters). There are all kinds of ways to do this but it will come across as rude if you get letters for some who require it and ignore others.

What are you talking about? "Come across as rude"??? Nobody's going to know, much less care, which pnm got recs for which houses and not for others. The sororities don't get together and compare recs! FFS stop making this $hit up.

Who cares?! Just go bust it and get them. It takes effort. If you won’t put in the effort, why should you get a bid over someone who did?

Now I’m worried. There was one house that I only had one person for — and she was a friend of a friend of a friend type of thing. I have no idea if she ever sent I. The rec. I sent my follow up thank you to remind her, but I don’t k ow that she did it.
Will the other houses know if for some reason I didn’t get a rec for one house but did for the others? I don’t want to look rude. What should I do?

by: wps

Stop worrying about this. There are many actives who received a bid from a house they did not secure a recommendation from. If a house falls in love with you, they will secure a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Be confident and show interest. Wishing the best for you.

No! No house will know a thing about any of your recs for other houses.
