do our first round ranks matter?

by:

hi so i’m a pnm this year and since we don’t get to meet the chapters before we do our first round ranking, i was just thinking of ranking the chapters based on their gpas last semester since academics are important to me. Does it really matter how i rank them if i get cut by ones i ranked in the first cluster and then the next choices go back up on my schedule?
i’ve heard from friends at other schools that our rankings don’t matter until pref and it’s just something that makes us think we have a say in where we end up.

You are absolutely correct. The only time your ranks matter is if you have more houses inviting you back than your schedule allows.

For philanthropy, if more than 8 houses want to invite you back then your rankings matter, and as many of your lower ranked ones would drop off to give you 8. Conversely, if 3 or more of your higher ranked houses release you then you would get back as many of your lower ranked ones to give you 8 or as close to that as possible. Same thing for sisterhood at 5 possible houses and pref at 2. Your choices only matter dependent on the number of sororities that want to invite you back. They have no idea how you rank them so that doesn't matter to their decisions. How you rank them is up to you, so if you don't feel anything strongly one way or another after seeing the videos then GPA is as good a way to rank as anything.

they have no idea how we rank them? so if we had them at the bottom but they get back on our list then they won't know they were at the bottom?

My last three in rank are just random b/c I don't know how to rank basing off info from curated posts on instagram and the weird info I get here, so there's a chance I am going to rank wrong. My perfect house might be the one I rank number 11 -- who knows?! But I don't want one of my 9, 10, 11 sororities to know I put them there, ya know?

No, they don't know how you rank them. They don't get that information.

Good question. I am assuming most pnm’s ( unless they have connections here) will simply go off rankings which is extremely unfortunate for many houses:(

While the sororities do have more power in who returns to the next round, the way you rank does matter. Imagine that you got 6 out of 8 of your #1 choices. The computer will try to fill the 2 available spots on your party list by going through your ranked chapters. If you were on the fence about one chapter and you decided to list it at #2, more than likely you will get to go and meet them in person. Same with your #3 rank. And the chapter which impressed you the least ( and you ranked last) would fall off your list, which would make you happy.

I still don’t understand rankings! I know the sorority has all the power and PNMs just list, but since I keep reading I prob won’t have a full schedule of 8 or 5 or 2, how does that work? Out of 11 I could have 7 cut me on the very first day and then only have 4, for instance? Then my schedule gets smaller every day?

There's a max of houses you can have for each round. So using your example, if seven houses release you after the first round, you would visit four houses for round two (max is eight). For round three, you can have a max of five. For pref round, you can have two.

Yes, it's possible that could happen, theoretically. In your example, if you go from 11 houses to 4 after first round, you would put all 4 of them down to return to for 2nd round because there are 5 possible slots, and with only 4 houses you aren't in a position to eliminate any, so you aren't dropping houses if there is still room on your schedule. After you visit those 4, the pref round is only 2 possible houses, so you would rank your top two and bottom 2 and see what you get back for pref. What happens when a sorority releases a pnm, is her ranks of them no longer matter because they are removed from her options. The algorithm then considers the invitations the pnm does have left for the next round, and only if there are more invitations than the max for that round will the algorithm eliminate based on her ranks to get her down to the max allowed. The algorithm always gives you as many houses back as possible for the best chance of getting a bid.

the sorority's and pnm's rankings matter. heres an example.
say u get invited back to 7 houses for philanthropy. after u rank, you get invited to 5 for sisterhood. ur rank matters here bc u likely got invited back to all 7 houses and the computer paired u up with the five chapters u ranked higher. ur schedule wont necessarily get smaller each round. when i rushed i got 7 first round, and then 5, and then 2, and i got my top choice from the first day of rush

No your rankings don't matter except maybe for pref unless you're a popular pnm. The majority of pnms don't get a full schedule so it doesn't really matter. Some people end up with two to four houses instead of a full schedule. Not to mention this year first round is entirely the recruitment teams choices.
