Serious question about NPHC

by:

Starting this by saying this is a genuinely curious question and I’m in no way trying to provoke or come off insensitive. I always see comments here about how all of the Panhellenic sororities are white with very few of color. I agree wholeheartedly with this observation and wish more poc would rush so change can begin. But my question is about NPHC, these sororities were formed due to poc not being allowed to join Panhellenic sororities and are historically all black sororities. Is this the reason more poc wont rush? Do they feel more comfortable and accepted in NPHC?

I think there’s definitely an aspect of fear of discrimination. However, I think if a PNM’s family has a history of NPHC, they’ll tend to follow that legacy rather than go NPC.

And in addition to fear of discrimination, there can be fear of peer disapproval for joining a traditionally white GLO.

About 10 years ago, the first black woman to be elected SGA president at Ole Miss was also the first black PNM to receive a bid from Phi Mu. She told an interviewer that in addition to experiencing racism from white students, she was called a sellout by some black students—including members of the NPHC chapter she had rushed and been rejected from.

I appreciate the honesty and open-ness of this topic. Was curious as well.

what’s so sad is that there is very little to no discrimination anymore. At least in mine there is absolutely none, we are very inclusive and it’s actually very important to us to be that and a safe place for everyone including lgbtq+
