Why are there only 11 Sororities here?

by: Why?

My cousin goes to the U of Virginia, which only has 17,000 students and they have 15 Sororities and they aren't even an SEC school. So, why are there only 11 Sororities here?

You realize that SEC is a football conference, right? Has nothing to do with anything else.

I’m sure the poster understands what SEC is. I believe the purpose was to indicate that SEC schools normally have a large Greek presence. Maybe you didn’t know that because you don’t go to an SEC school? Or you were just trying to be rude and unhelpful. (If that was your goal then congrats! You did it!)

To the original poster, it doesn’t make sense to me, either. Being an SEC school with a large Greek population and freshman classes becoming larger every year you’d think UArk would have more than 11.

Not fact, just my opinion but I don’t think Greek life tries very hard to bring new houses to campus. They LOVE to boast that we have the largest chapters in the country - you will hear this repeatedly once on campus. I mean, having large chapters only means every house has amazing girls so it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

There's a vast difference adding sororities to a school like UA vs UVA. First of all, a sorority has to want to come on to campus, and they won't do that unless they can be competitive, which means they need to find $15 million to build a house. That involves fundraising and local alumnae support on a huge scale, plus no national sorority can spread itself thin considering they have other chapter houses to build or renovate as well. The chapter houses at UVA are nothing like here, so it's much easier to add a sorority at a school like that. Also, sororities have to be invited to come on, and UA panhellenic has been doing that over the past 10 years by adding 3 of them, which is a big deal, and there needs to be a gap of a few years in between adding houses to allow the new ones to get up to Chapter Total. So after DG came in 2016, it would have been time to consider expanding again in 2019, but there was a pandemic. So that's why there are 11 sororities here.

Thank you! That makes so much sense, and is the first time I’ve heard a real explanation!

Any thoughts as to which might be the next Sorority?

It would be entirely up to whichever nationals want to be considered to come on here at the time. A general notice of being open for expansion at UA would go to NPC and then any interested nationals would submit information to panhellenic about why they would be a good fit and what they have to offer, then panhellenic would choose three or so to come and present in person and then one would be chosen. Sometimes a sorority is interested in a particular school and vice versa but the timing is bad because the sorority is currently committed to expanding elsewhere. So it's about a sorority's resources at the time and if they are a good fit with the school.

I think if we got a new sorority it should be theta. They were here back in the day so they have alum support. Also huge all across Texas and there are so many Texas girls coming to school here so they would get that edge.
I would also love to see how alpha phi would do here. Not sure if they would do too good since they tend to be better in the north/ west coast but could see them getting a lot of influencer type girls similar to how they do at Bama

The influencer types are getting to be a bit of a problem at Bama. They go there just to join a sorority for followers. They do nothing, contribute nothing, and cause problems because they don't really care about the house they joined, the other girls in it, or the rules that need to be followed. Then they either get kicked out or drop, even leave the school, and say it's because their house was mean to them. Selfish takers. It's a shame for the houses and a shame for them too. I hope this doesn't become the norm for sororities.

Alpha Phi has a terrible reputation nationally because they recruit solely for looks and don't care about Values Based Recruitment. Just Google Alpha Phi U of Michigan Recruitment. Their National runs their Recruitment for them and ranks all the Sisters and only puts pretty PNMs with Pretty Sisters. They hide girls that they don't consider attractive; wouldn't you be humiliated to be a Sister and realize that you are not considered up to par?

I don’t think theta would want to come here and risk being stuck at the bottom for a decade. As long as Panhellenic requires the top houses to cut the most first round they will always be exclusive to pnm’s

Theta was here and closed their chapter at tge same time Kappa delta came here so l am not sure they will want to come back. Also Theta left Ole Miss so maybe Delta Zeta? They have a chapter at Arkansas state so they might have the alumnae support? Truthfully l Don't think we should bring in another sorority for a while
