connections / reaching out
by: hopefulbe real w me, how much do connections in house rly matter if you have a good resume, good rec letters and good gpa/grades? also is it weird if you reach out to active members to ask questions?? like is that awk or do they not mind at all… just trying to get some insight due to coming from out of state lol bc i want to have an open mind but some people are saying you’re just going to be cut first round from some w no connections like how accurate is that

You have to have connections to the top houses because Panhellenic requires top houses to cut so heavy the first night and then even deeper round two. So they are not going to cut their friends and family they are pulling for therefore unknowns get cut. This year there is no round one in person so unfortunately that is even worse on girls without connections. No chance of making a crazy connection with someone round one and they fight to keep you around. Chi o will be told to cut the most girls because they are always are told that. That is where it’s unfair. Panhellenic sets them up to seem like the MOST desired. Then it’s usually kappa then pi phi/zeta. Zeta is your best chance if your really cute and outgoing. Still not having round one in person is a huge bummer for out of state girls. Go make connections via Instagram or however you can through family friends ect….! No it’s not weird to follow girls, ask questions ect…. Some will respond and some won’t but you have nothing to lose at this point if you want the most choices during the week. Good luck!

Large cuts also help prevent houses from leading on pnms just to be cut before pref- it allows pnms to look more closely at their options.

Not true! It’s because of the huge cuts that make these houses seem so exclusive. This doesn’t even allow for pnm’s to cut them

It doesn’t hurt for them to try and make a connection?? All girls want more choices during rush. Resume and all that is great but your right a lot of girls have awesome resumes. Rec letters pretty much mean nothing have this point. They are not cutting you without one except maybe chi o. Having no round one means making a connection via social media is your only shot so why not atleast try??

You absolutely need connections. I was out of state, great resume, 4.0/4.0 GPA, 33 ACT, STEM major and I got cut from every top house night one, likely because of my lack of connections. They don’t care if you have a great resume because so does nearly every girl in recruitment, and for those they invite back that don’t have a great resume, they’re probably their BFF from high school or an alumna is pulling hard for them. If you want to make connections, message girls on Instagram. Don’t just message girls from top houses, because it’ll get back to the other chapters that you think you’re too good for them. And keep in mind that the top houses may not even want to connect with you since they already have a good idea of who they want. Give the other houses a chance as these are the houses that are truly considering you, your personality, your morals, and your resume and not just looking at you as someone they recognize from high school. All houses are good, but you’re more likely to make more genuine friends in the other houses.

Connections are everything for the top two houses. Lots of lots of pmns with 4.0's, 30+ act scores, school activities, leadership positions, volunteer stuff, and with perfect reputations etc were all cut by these two houses the first night.
we knew of several pmns who did get in these houses with less than steller resumes - all due to connections.
as much as it sucks to be released, you'll likely have a much better connection in a different house who actually picks you because they like who you are.

Honestly you will be wasting your time reaching out to the actives. The top houses already know who they are taking on bid day. All are girls that they already know (sisters of current members…friends from high school; nothing that these girls have actually accomplished on their own. It’s just who they already know.)
Having all the right stuff on your resume means absolutely nothing to those top houses. It doesn’t matter because they already have their spots filled. They are just going through the motions of rush. It’s actually sickening and sad that they don’t give girls an honest chance, but it is what it is and nothing will ever change that.
If you’re wanting the “top” house of the ones that have legitimate bids to give out, then look at Tri Delta or KD. Both are fabulous and full of smart, active and involved girls.
The rest of the houses are just full of the girls who got cut by everyone else and learned to love their house. Sounds harsh, but it’s reality. Does anyone go to Arkansas and dream of being an ADPi or an AOPi?

What’s your problem? Adpi is one of the best houses on campus. They are well known and well liked. I don’t know but a couple aopi but they are nice and friendly. I would pick either of these over tridelt any day. And no I’m not an aopi or a adpi. I’m in a “top” house.

Tri delt, KD, and ADPi are all great houses.
I'm sure AOII is as well, I just don't know any of them.

There is no way reaching out to an active member in one of the top 4 houses now will get you a bid in august. The members will kinda chat back and forth with you just to be nice, but you’ll just be annoying them.

It’s not weird to reach out. Is it a long shot? Yes. Strange things happen in recruitment though and whoever these girls are rushing may not like them! This site makes it seem like every girl wants a top but that is false. Also it’s not necessarily chi o then kappa then zeta then pi phi in that order. Kappa was shocked last bid day when many of their girls went to other houses ( especially to pi phi) So list or not there is always a chance if you make an effort and very little chance if don’t!

No way a house will give a girl a bid over small talk via social media. There is no way to impress an active enough that way for the active to go back and fight hard for a girl that NOBODY knows. At least in the top 4 houses.

I hate that everyone on here says you need to have a million connections. I had 0 and I’m in a top house. You have to be easy to talk to, respectful, and outgoing. I am from out of state, knew no one in my sorority, had like pretty good grades, some leadership experience, and did athletics. I had the best rush experience because I was myself and prepared weeks ahead. If you be yourself you will find a house that fits your personality. It is not about being in a top house, go where you enjoy yourself.

So your a zeta?? If your saying that your resume was an average ( good but not amazing) than your not a pi phi without knowing someone. Zero chance your a chi o if out of state. Unless you have money ( like big texas money) your not a kappa. So I am going to guess your super cute and have a great personality and really clicked with some zeta that fought for you and got you noticed with her friends and the recruitment team. Zeta loves out of state girls. Please let me know if I am right! Just know that you are the exception to the rule!

“zero chance your a chi o if out of state”, im sorry what??? lol yes I am a chi o, almost all of my friends in chi o are also out of state. i find it funny that you have these preconceived facts about who i am or where i come from because of the sorority i am in. says a lot about how much people think they know. the way you are putting people into a box is super rude and i hope you can better educate yourself.

Not calling you a liar, but I have a friend in chi o who absolutely hates it (has to go along with it because her mom would disown her if she dropped it), and she told me at the beginning of work week, they held up a list and told them “if a name isn’t on this list, then they will not be a chi o.”
Soooo….you’re trying to tell people you knew absolutely nobody, and impressed them enough before you even got on campus to get a bid?!

yup! i knew absolutely no one, and yes, I did impress them enough DURING rush to get a bid. you sound bitter and like you didn’t get the house you wanted. not everyone is as miserable as you. nice try!
What I will say to the person who originally asked the question if connections matter, it depends who you are. What you should not do is let these angry people on this site tell you that there’s absolutely no way you will ever get a “top house.” First of all, the rankings are dumb to begin with, go where you feel welcome and appreciated. And second, the people who are telling you to not even try are the same people who were dropped from their favorite houses over personality/grades. People who don’t “succeed” don’t want to see others succeed. And they all know it and can’t admit it because it makes them look bad. If you go into rush with a positive and open outlook, you will have an amazing rush.

I’m out of state (Tx) and didn’t know anyone or anything really about rush coming in and got chi o or kappa, I’m not saying which. I had 4.0, captain of sports team involved in multiple clubs, decent social media. It’s sort of a one in a million chance. There’s probably like 10 girls in top top house pc’s like this.

Awesome for you but it is RARE because that describes many many girls going through recruitment. Hopefully your a chi o because kappa should no longer be considered a top top house after last years recruitment. No one on campus likes these rude ,judgmental , plain girls even kappas.

Personally I understand why Panhellenic makes the top houses cut so heavy. You don’t want some houses having huge amounts of girls towards the end of the week and other houses not filling their parties. This ensures other houses are giving a chance early on in the week!
