First round grade cuts

by:

I've heard the top 4-5 houses release most pmns with less than a 3.5 gpa after the first round. Is this accurate? I know the houses compete for the academic award each semester, so I figured this is probably true.

Pretty much....every chapter has a different national requirement & many chapters set up local requirements that are higher than nationals. It is the easiest way to release 3/4 of the PNMs to concentrate on a smaller number of girls

do you know what the U of A chapters' requirements are?

so if I have a 3.25, I can pretty much forget about getting a top house? I mean, that's fine. I just want to be realistic.

Unless you have a strong connection fighting for you then yes. Kappa, chi o, zeta and pi phi will cut you first night and possibly Tri delt :(

Tri Delt will definitely drop at 3.25 if you do not have a connection.

omg, really? i have just under a 3.50. i will get cut from all these houses right away? i don't really have many connections. i did go to high school with some of them but we aren't that close. i guess it's better to know sooner than later so i can focus on other houses, but it's still tough.

kappa, chi o, and especially pi phi will cut under 3.5. Tri delt cuts more for grades than zeta, so you may have a better chance with zeta. It's not a guarantee these houses will cut under 3.5, so hopefully you have good connections to keep you there.

Tri delt may cut harder for grades than zeta but last year zeta cut as many girls the first night as kappa chi o and pi phi . I was a gamma chi and it was brutal for a lot of my girls that were shocked round two. I think it’s important to get the word out to pnm’s without connections and the grades what to expect.

In addition to the others listed, KD cuts harshly for gpa also.

do you know what gpa KD cuts at?

I’m pretty sure KD cuts below a 3.6 or a 3.65.

with the large number of girls going through, a 3.5 might not make the cut either.

A larger number of PNM's doesn't mean a higher GPA for grade cuts. RFM will determine the numbers that houses can invite back, and that's a percentage based on the number of PNM's participating, not a predetermined number. So the more PNM's, the higher the numbers will be adjusted. Now, if there is a lot of grade inflation and more PNM's have higher GPA's, then that would mean chapters would adjust their GPA minimums up a point or two. But don't anybody panic or give up before recruitment even starts!

Going to be honest, GPA is the easiest and fastest way to cut girls. It’s very different for every house what the cut off is, so don’t count yourself out if yours is low. But if yours is extremely low, don’t expect many invites back. And if yours is very high, don’t assume that means you’ll automatically get invited back to the tops. For reference I has a 4.0/4.0 and 33 ACT and was cut from the top 3 houses and eventually the other tops.

And don’t assume if you were involved in HS that you’ll get many back either. I had 200+ service hours and was in 4 clubs and got 3 houses back.

They tell you not to be “fake”… but if you have an RBF. Make sure you smile. Hahaha

I’m the original commenter and you’re 100% correct. I was president of a few clubs and had hundreds of service hours and only had 5 houses the 2nd day

I, too had a 4.0 and a 34 ACT score, and got cut by Kappa and Chi O initially, but that’s not what bothered me.
Pi Phi cutting me on night 3 was a gut punch.
Grades are so important to me, and that was my first choice. But the house I ultimately chose appreciates my contribution to the chapter GPA. 😉

Did you have connections at Pi Phi?

I didn’t have real connections with Pi Phi. Just the ones I made over the summer since we were allowed to chat all summer long last year.

I absolutely love my house, and wouldn’t change a thing now.

If you are under a 3.5 unweighted you will be cut by the top 5 unless you are a legacy, have absolute best friends, or possibly are from a desired area or school where they are trying to build numbers. It is not personal. It is just the most efficient way to cut more than 1000 after the first round. You will have an amazing experience in any house here so don't drop if this happens to you.

So true. Top houses are given a number they are required to cut first night and it’s a big number. Without meeting you they have to base that decision on something. Grades are the easiest! If you have a close connection that fights very hard for you than you may be one of the lucky few that squeak by the first night.

Pay attention to grades in HS if you are going to a huge Greek school like Arkansas.
Rush here is brutal and cut throat.

Will any houses take a 2.9 gpa?

By: Help
by: Honest

Talk about self improvement and how you didn’t take high school seriously. That u didn’t apply yourself, because of x,y,z and how you wanna be better. Sororities will eat that ish up. That GPA is considered a grade risk, even in the “lower sororities”, so just be honest.

Then talk about how you want to be involved in x,y,z in the chapter. You’ll probably have to do more research about EVERY CHAPTER and the events they do. Instagram is a great place to look, as well as the chapter websites. Tell them what you want to be involved in, and why.

You’ll have to try a lot harder then other girls for sure. Just because you already have a red flag up. But I know my sorority has people with low GPA’s… so it’s not unheard of.

Anyone who says sorority recruitment isn’t surface level sometimes is lying. But GPA is the easiest way for sororities to get their numbers down and become more selective. So work your booty off at open party, AND BE YOURSELF. No one likes a robot.

the minimum requirement to register for recruitment is a 2.5. if all the houses require a higher gpa than that, why do they say a 2.5?

By: why
by: Because

There will be houses ( maybe 2 or 3) that will take that a 2.5 but boy you better have other things going for you like cute and personable

National NPC rules do not allow a campus panhellenic council to require a minimum GPA to rush, but the university can require a minimum GPA for any campus group, so that is the school's requirement that we have to go by.

How does someone even get into the university with a 2.5? Not making fun of people, just curious.
I agree it’s not right to say you need a 2.5 to register when NOBODY will take you with that low of a GPA…well unless you’re a chi o legacy who’s parents have paid gobs of money for them to take you.
