People take connections for granted

by:

For all you girls who just have an easy way into a sorority because you know someone from your home town, don’t take that for granted. Your experience is probably a million times better than most of ours just because you had someone pulling for you. So when rush is over u better give that girl a big thank you because you probably took the spot of girls who would fit perfectly into that sorority but have no connections

This is such truth. Girls from further away and smaller areas are at a disadvantage in this process. However, I truly believe they’re happier where they land because they end up in a more genuine, less high school 2.0 house.

It doesn’t always work out. What if you feel like the house that wants you is not the right fit because you didn’t hit it off with some of the girls or didn’t feel like you had much in common? A faked or forced fit usually isn’t a good fit. And it is not fair to another girl who might really want that spot.

If girls have no connections, there is a good chance they don’t land anywhere. So does that mean they aren’t meant for Greek life? It’s pretty hard to explain why a girl who has a lot going for her and really wants to be part of a sisterhood cannot find a fit anywhere. Sororities like to boast that they are diverse, but the winning formula is the same- instate and/or with sorority connections. Where’s the diversity in that? I personally love my house and my experience, and feel lucky we found each other. But I am not the only active who hates the week of anxiety and the crushing disappointment that too many girls feel. The system is flawed, and I think we owe it to the PNMs to be honest about it. The system only works for some girls. And some other girls who are just as worthy but without connections get left out.

The line that everyone ends up where they are supposed to only applies to the girls who get bids. It doesn’t apply to those who don’t. That’s why it’s a load of bs, and saying so only tells those girls they are supposed to get nothing. Being honest about it really is nicer.

There will be other sororities coming here to colonize soon! Maybe even 2 more!
How cool will it be to help establish a new chapter here?

Yes, connections do make a difference. If you think it’s bad for sorority rush wait until you apply for jobs or internships. Life isn’t fair.

There is very little valid comparison between getting a job - real job, after college - and the Greek system. The rest of the world isn’t run by a bunch of teenagers.

People who have to use connections to get a job are losers who can’t make it on there own, and employers who only employ those with connections are lazy and do not have the company’s best interest mind.

pretty sure it’s illegal about 10 different ways to use the same practice in hirIng that are used during rush

The point is that in every aspect of life connections help you out. Never said that people without connections wouldn’t get a job, and people who do use connections aren’t losers. If one very competitive spot in a job or internship opens up, a person with a connection will have a much higher chance. That’s how the world works. So complaining about it is useless

Connections help in every aspect of life? Seriously? If you have cancer, do connections help? If you are running a race, do connections help? If you are taking an exam, do connections help? I think that is an over-justification for a crappy unofficial policy.

In the big real world, beyond Arkansas, you will find that when you apply for positions with national companies or out of state opportunities, attempting to use connections is not only more way more uncommon than common, it is frowned upon and could cost you the opportunity. Because it is not an element for success.

Not having connections is that you get to live life without comparing yourself to your old high school friends. There is a lot of freedom in that! All good chapters! All great actives!

you are assuming Unfair will get a bid. if there are only “good chapters”, what do you tell the pnms that don’t get any bids? that they’re not good? I hope you don’t tell them the system works because that’s a slap in the face......”the system works and that means without you“

This is so true about connections. I’m in a middle tier house and love it. Honestly, some of the “top tier” houses (Kappa/XO especially) seem like high school 2.0..........those houses are full of high school cliques. I came to college to branch out and meet new people and have new experiences, not to socialize with the same old people from back home.
