how much does being a legacy count for at the U of A? Also, am I a legacy if my step-mom was in a sorority?

You would be considered a legacy from your step-mom as long as she would claim you are!

Please keep in mind that the top houses have been around for so long that the truth is they usually have enough legacies going through they could fill an entire pledge class. Obviously they are not going to do that. At the MOST they would take half of their pledge class. So even though legacies get that special automatic invite to second round going into third round you still have a 50 percent chance of getting cut. Two girls in my group ( one legacy from chi o and one legacy for pi phi ) both got cut after second round. The chi o legacy was VERY upset. The pi phi legacy wasn’t it. She actually said she thought they were boring and now didn’t have to worry about hurting her moms feelings. So you never know..... YOU may not even feel it for whoever your a legacy for. Good luck!

Legacies are big for the top houses like Kappa, Chi O, Pi Phi, and Tri Delt. Most women they take are a legacy. Every house favors them though over a non legacy. If your step mom is an Arkansas alum that also carries more weight than from a different school

Speak for your own sorority about mostly taking legacies! Mine is one of those you listed that do, and we don't. We also don't automatically favor a legacy over a non-legacy, especially if the NL is more qualified.

I dont think being a legacy has the weight it used to have - the quality of the pnm is more important these days but the legacy tie is just an added push but not a guarantee. However l would get a recommendation for every house whether you are a legacy or not- it helps the chapter get to know you better- it's worth it!

I think it depends on how involved your mom/sister is/was. An alum from a school other than Arkansas doesn't weigh as heavily as one who graduated from here. A sister who joined a house and then dropped out sophomore year doesn't weigh as heavily as one that was an officer, etc.

Is your mom/sister actively involved in drumming up support letters from her pledge sisters on your behalf? Is your mom/sister meeting with her alumnae group this summer to discuss recruitment? Is she trying to network with active members so they know about you and your interest?

These are just some ideas on how to leverage your legacy status in a sea of legacies.

this is super helpful! thank you for the advice. She did graduate from the U of A, but I'm not sure how much networking/meetings she's doing. i'll be sure to talk to her about that!
